Herpes with undetectable viral load
« on: March 04, 2018, 01:22:57 pm »
Undetectable viral load meaning chances are very low to transmit HIV to the partner if protection is not being used, now jus wanna know the chances of me getting the hiv virus if i got the herpes (saw the bisters on the shaft of the penis) and before i know it we were not using protection all the time and got the herpes from a positive partner with undetectable viral load for a very long time now, I am a male in a monogamous/serodiscodent relationship,
Serodiscordant, relationship

If the concern is about your transmission risk and not about supporting your partner than as you are not living with HIV you are limited to post such concerns here in the "AM I" section

Now most people have one or another type of herpes, common enough infection. (not nice but sadly true) If you don't have it avoid it of course, your partner can also take medication to reduce herpes transmission and also any outbreaks.

People who are infected with herpes can transmit the virus during periods where the virus is shedding, but there are no symptoms. Because of this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people with herpes who have a regular sex partner who is not infected with herpes may want to take suppressive treatment as an added precaution, in addition to consistent and correct condom use.

All it would do is increase the HIV transmission risk if you engage in an already risky activity with a delectable VL. The fear of the past was that a STI may increase someone's VL but since you had no risk to begin with as he's UD and if we accept your statement of UD for a moment as fact than there is no risk to increase to start with.

In short an STI does not create a HIV risk, it may increase a risk if you have an STI and he has a detectable VL anyhow that is the theory behind STI's and its often misunderstood even by websites and references.

Now the only real world studies also back up that theory, the partner studies found no transmission or increased risk reported for HIV transmission despite infections with other STI's and VL's have been suppressed despite other STI's

Now course I am going to tell you to protect yourself, U=U is fun until someone stop taking his meds and is no longer UD. Its based on trust, you trust your partner, I will not judge that but i don't know you or your partner or have to trust him, so i'm going to give you the condom lesson like it or not, hope you understand my position.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim
