Diarrhea
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:36:30 pm »
I have been on Truvada, Norvir, and Prezista since October. I have developed severe diarrhea a couple weeks ago. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My first thought is since you have been on meds awhile is maybe the loose stools have nothing to do with the meds and something else is going on. How long have you had HIV and what were your numbers when you started ?

About 10 years ago I got some kind of tummy bug and lost almost 20lbs … my doctors were really aggressive at trying to figure out what was up but never did and I eventually got better. Im not suggesting this will be the same for you, what Im trying to point out is the gut is a complicated organ and sometimes bad things can hide out in there and are hard to detect.

Please see your doctor and update us.

CD 4 was 43. Viral load was 287,478. My blood for viral load has to go to the CDC to get the result (no other lab can get a result and CDC uses an experimental testing procedure). Current CD 4 is 326. Waiting on CDC for viral load.  I take my meds when I eat dinner and that is when diarrhea is the worst. However I still have diarrhea occasionally during the day. I'm on 1200mg Azithromycin once a week which I divide into two doses with my doctors permission and it causes diarrhea also.

I see . The way your post was worded it led me to think the diarrhea was a new thing. I suppose only your doctor will be able to assess your situation.

My doctor switched out my Isentress (or Intelence my brain is foggy a lot) for prezista and norvir.  Within short order, I had severe diarrhea.  It was like I was on straight AZT again.  We gave it adequate time to see if it would subside and it never did.  I returned to my previous regimen and it quickly subsided.

Has the diarrhea come after starting the antibiotic?  Or was that started after you already had the issue?

Consider a regimen change to see if the issues persist.  As long as you continue with another med, you have the option of returning if that's not the cause.

Hey, get your doctor to look at this as an absolute priority to sort out.

If he/she doesn't worry about your quality of life tell them this, if you're just pooing the pills out the other end, you won't be absorbing all the medications at optimal levels.

I wondered a similar thought and am not sure if a diarrhea is from diet of medicine.

I was on Truvada and Aluvia (like Kaltera) for 8 months and for 8 months i was liquid or in the best case mush!
It was very inconvenient and i had some embarrassing accidents. I recently switched to Atripla and - WOW - just call me The Rock!
I am back on "solid ground" and i never thought i would.
My point - perhaps you should switch meds. Speak to your doc!
