"Superinfection" Study
« on: August 15, 2014, 12:44:37 am »
They say this is the largest study to date.  It seems worries over faster progression do not bear out.  They do say there is the possibility of acquiring a strain, which is drug-resistant to your regimen, which could cause treatment issues.

I'm curious what others know about that last point.  It seems that issue isn't studied well.  My HIV clinic says they've seen patients who were doing well and claimed to be fully adherent, who suddenly became resistant to their regimen, which happened to be the resistance their partner had.

just because your poz and having sex with someone else who is, doesn't mean you shouldn't use a condom. This is only one of the reasons.

here's the deal: Does PrEP work? Yes! Does PEP work? Yes! Then someone on successful therapy is on both PrEP and PEP and pretty damned protected against being re-infected. If such a thing as "superinfection" were true, in the 30 yrs of poz people banging poz people, we would be see an explosion of out-of-control HIV infections. But we don't, so what does that tell you?

I don't know anything about female prostitutes in Kenya; but reports in America have shown about 2 dozen people who have dealt with being infected with a second mutated virus. Every last one of them had a very detectable viral load from either never being on treatment or being non-compliant to their treatment. In other words, they had no meds in their system working as PrEP or PEP. (the craziest story is of 2 gays guys in the hospital with AIDS who sneaked into each other's room for sex)

My HIV clinic says they've seen patients who were doing well and claimed to be fully adherent, who suddenly became resistant to their regimen, which happened to be the resistance their partner had.
although a very small percentage of people who have been adherent have experienced treatment failure, I would bet that there is more to these stories (if even true!) than meets the eye. Too frequently I've heard similar stories from medical staff, not based on real facts; but used as nothing more than a deterrent against pozzies having their ("nasty", and often "gay") pozzie sex.

however mrtoad makes a valid point. Pozzies not using condoms put themselves at risk for other STDs and UTIs.
