So now it's 30F with freezing rain/sleet/wintry mix until 2 PM, then another 36 hours of heavy rain but hey, at least the temperature will go up to 60F even if we can't be outdoors to enjoy it.

It's been impossible for me to go the supermarket this week -- it's either been a polar vortex or precipitation. I'm going to have to find a way to sneak into Reading Terminal Market for a couple day's worth of food after my podiatry appointment and then utilize Philly's secret underground concourses to maneuver my way around the subway system. Finally Sunday I'll be able to walk to the supermarket.

We just achieved a post-polar vortex high of 60F and are heading towards 63F. Unfortunately it's pouring rain and will only get worse so not to be enjoyed outdoors.

In other news my parents depart on a 10-day Caribbean cruise in 3 hours.

We have achieved a post vortex high of 82 in Miami - however, with the humidity it feels like 87.... time to move my plant away from the windows and put the talcum powder on my nasty bits.

Edited to add: Or I could move my nasty bits away from the windows and put talcum powder on the plant...  Decisions, decisions.

Numbers are in! The polar vortex (nothing to see there just move on along!) coast the US economy $5 billion dollars, the most of any weather event since non-Hurricane Sandy.

We were taking down the Christmas decor this weekend, when I found this popping up.  It is a hyacinth.  We just had -5 temps with -30 wind chills, and this decides it is the right time to pop up.  I also noticed some trees already getting buds on them.  Messed up.  It was around 50 this weekend and sunny.  I know this will die.  I'm not sure whether it spent a lot of energy and won't come back in spring, or whether it will not be as pretty or last long.

The vortex also meant really unusually mild weather all across Scandanavia and Northern Europe generally, and vegetation is out of whack there, among other problems caused by the lack of snow cover and daily freeze-thaw cycles.
Kick some more bark around that mistaken bulb and it may just wait comfortably for a good time to bloom later on.

Well fuck me up the ass -- Winter Storm Watch has been put up by NOAA and now we're in the 4-7 inch zone. When I went to be last night it was 1-2". And NOAA is always on the conservative side. edit: now they've revised it to 4-6"

My man on the internet says I'm right on the line of the 3-6"/4-8" zones so I guess that's kind of in line with NOAA, but that 8-12" zone is only 40 miles east of me...

Sucks more if this causes my doctor's appointment to be cancelled the next day because I have a lot of things to go over. And yes, SUPERMARKET RUN TODAY!

yep -- looks like Richmond will finally get into the snow action.  Only 3-6 inches, but anyone who's lived in Richmand (Miss P) knows that they all go batshit crazy when white stuff falls from the clouds.  Glad we did our shopping yesterday, because I am not stepping foot near a grocery store today!!

Indeed! Snow in Richmond is a glorious, rare thing -- enjoy yourself.

edit: they've even extended the watch east to Williamsburg, which is even more rare than Richmond for snow usually -- plus the entire Eastern Shore but NOT Hampton Roads at all.

NOAA just upped us to 6-8" with their 3PM new advisory, and we now have Gale Warnings along the coast. I've seen other predictions of 6-12" now but only for the I-95 corridor from Baltimore to NYC, all of Long Island and Cape Cod. Possible 18" for central Delaware and coast from Cape May to Tom's River, NJ

The Jersey Shore is really going to get hit the worst with this storm.

I also feel bad because my ~80 year old parents are returning from a cruise docking in Baltimore tomorrow morning and then will need to do a two hour drive home. They will definitely need to stay there overnight in a hotel.

11PM NOAA update for me now ups it: 6-10 inches

They had us at 4-6" just 12 hours ago. Maybe I better count on 12 inches. I'm just not used to something that large after years of Wumpella's nuts.

Suppose to start snowing around 4am, with up to 4 inches expected.  We just had a kinda surprise snow Friday, that brought 2 inches.  It was in the 50's this weekend and sunny.

And, then the Polar Vortex Part 2.  But, I understand it isn't coming as far south and won't be as bad.  But, we still have highs around 15 and lows of negative one forecasted.  It has been a cold winter, thus far.  I love snow, but not the cold temps.  I remember our winter a couple years ago, when it seemed winter never really came.  It rarely got below freezing and we were already doing outdoor projects by late February.  I am looking for flights to Florida for this February.

NEW NOAA update (4:00AM) increased: now 10-14" expected LOL -- oh, and an overnight low of 8°F/wind chills of -6°F

Seriously, is this a joke? Yesterday started with 4 inches and the day before we were barely thinking of an inch. Now instead of the heaviest being on the coast I am exactly in the bull's eye.

Snow starts at noon and ends by 5AM Wednesday.

This was not fun at all -- and I'm only half done because it's going to snow more and drift heavily for another 12 hours. I didn't measure it but we must have 10 inches of snow already where I live.

As of 7:50 PM Philadelphia had an official reading of 12 inches and mind you, it's still snowing hard as I write this, with winds gusting to 20mph. It should end around 1am.

Philadelphia also broke another record today: This is the first time since 1884 the City of Brotherly Love has had three 6"+ snow events before February 1.

As of midnight the snow has stopped. Final reading at PHL airport was 13.5"

Highest total in our NOAA reporting area was 15.8" in Manalapan, NJ 60 miles northeast of me.

I now have to go out and finish shoveling in -10°F wind chill factor weather. NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS.

Then I have a 2:30 PM HIV doctor appointment downtown.

Here's a fun zoom-able map link for snow totals in the northeast:

This way I can make sure Mitchypoo doesn't inflate her numbers! (8.5" *scoffs*)

6" this time.
Your 14" of fluffy light powder pales in comparison to the 35" of wet heavy snow that we got last year. Just sayin'. Better luck next time.  :)

At least my doctor called and rescheduled me for next Monday -- I'm tuckered out. Plus it's only 16F right now with 0F wind chill. :-\

ps: we once had two ~25" full-on blizzards within five days of each other back in the '08/'09 winter so if you want to pull up to the urinal for a pissing match I'm game.

HELLO is anyone the least bit concerned about my impending SNOWPOCALYPSE!

per NOAA

MAIN IMPACT...NORTHERN PARTS OF THE AREA COULD SEE A TRACE TO
ONE HALF INCH OF SNOW. SOUTHERN AREAS ICE ACCUMULATION UP TO
  TWO TENTHS OF AN INCH.

Is this what's commonly meant by "LOL"?

MY God they are now saying up to 1/2 inch? I was just at the Chinese Buffet trying to fatten up in case things go bad with the snow and ice, and hadnt heard this revised figure!

We're already being told to expect another snowstorm Sunday night/Monday and then one right before the Super Bowl.

Oh please, mary -- back in '78 we had ~27" in one storm and 2 weeks later had 54" (I win!).  Hell the state of RI was shut down for 2 weeks and snow removal equipment was flown in from Buffalo.......
