PEP FAILURE?
« on: April 03, 2024, 01:33:56 pm »
Hello
Here is my story:
I met a guy on 23rd of March. We deeply kissed each other using our tongues. Condomless oral sex also took place (I sucked his penis intensively despite having a thrust in my mouth). We rubbed our dicks together. Finally I put my finger into his anus and played with his hole. He didn't ejaculate at all. I masturbated and ejaculated on the floor. After that he disclosed to me that he is HIV positive.
I was really afraid hearing that. On 25rd of March I went to an emergency clinic and took PEP exactly 42 hours after the incident. I also tested the same day for HIV which came back negative.
But the same day that I began PEP I developed fever (38.5 C), I had night sweats and my tonsils get enlarged and full of pus. I visited the doctor again on 26th of March and he put me on antibiotics (doxycycline for 7 days). All these seven days I had low grade fever (till 37.5 C), night sweats were insisting but my tonsils got better. I'm afraid that I'm seroconverted but the doctor said that perhaps something else bothers me (he ran a test for STD in mouth and I' m waiting for results. It will take a week for them). He is afraid of gonorrhea in mouth.
Could all these be early symptoms of HIV infection? Could I have already seroconverted despite taking PEP? What's the rate of PEP failure? I would like to say that low grade fever and night sweats are insisting.
Thanks in advance for your response.

Not an HIV risk to you.

Giving a blowjob is such a minute HIV risk that it doesn't warrant testing outside the standard yearly screening. (thrush) Fungal overgrowth changes nothing, the mouth generally lacks a route for HIV to infect. You would need gaping open holes like Meth mouth and even then saliva would also be a barrier as it neutralises HIV by damaging the receptors needed to infect human cells.

No need, but you started PEP. As for testing, it means you didn't have HIV a few months ago.

Nothing to do with HIV

Yeah, it's unrelated to your HIV status. The doctor doesn't need to be afraid, it's your throat, not his. All he needs to do is treat it and wait for the results of the tests ordered.

No, no and irreverent.

I hope you feel better soon, keep working with your healthcare provider to treat what is causing you to feel unwell.

Here's what you need to know to reduce your HIV risks:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier-acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms; testing is the only way to know.

Kind regards

Jim

Thanks for your answer!

So, is there any risk of HIV transmission in my case? Should I worry for that incident?

Essentially what you posted here isn't an HIV concern, so I see no need to worry and certainly no need for PEP but what is done is done.

Continue working with your healthcare provider to treat whatever is causing you to feel unwell.

Thanks!
As far as it concerns PEP I'm taking two drugs: argiodin and tivicay.
I'm 11 days on PEP and so far it is well tolerated.
I'll take it for 30 days and then I'll test again.
Is PEP safe? Does it have any side effects?

It's not two drugs it's three. Argiodin is a combination of two drugs TDF + FTC and Tivicay contains DTG.

This is something to discuss with your healthcare provider, however, generally, these drugs are very well tolerated and you should not expect side effects except prehaps for some initial setting in.

I wish you well but please don't post about this again. I'm not going to pretend that what you posted here was an HIV risk that warranted testing or needed PEP as pretending it was would be a disservice to you and the community.
