Legal Services?
« on: November 07, 2020, 05:45:54 pm »

Does anyone know of an NGO or legal support group for people with HIV in the United States that is free or not very expensive, and it may be possible to make an inquiry by email?

Try googling the " Legal Aid Society" , and try narrowing that search down to the area you live in. Perhaps they can be of some help or assistance to you.

The local bar associations of most metropolitan areas have a lawyer referral system which helps those looking for a lawyer who can help with a specific issue are linked up with a lawyer whose practice focuses on that area of the law.  The specifics regarding fees. etc. vary from place to place but for a small fee (say, $35.00) who can speak with a knowledgeable attorney about your issue and he/she can assess if/how they can help you.

For example, if the "DC" part of your handle refers to "District of Columbia", here is some information on how to access help through the DC bar association's program.

Scroll down to the section labeled "Finding a Lawyer" and you will find the following:

Referral services. The Bar Association of the District of Columbia has a lawyer referral service that can refer you to an attorney who may be able to assist you with your problem. The email address is lrs@badc.org. You will receive a one-hour consultation for a small fee and if your case has merit, that consulting attorney may consider taking on your case for representation. Another resource for finding a lawyer is through DC Refers, which sponsors an online listing of qualified lawyers who are willing to represent modest-means clients at below-market rates. You may view the directory at dcrefers.org. Other organizations may provide referrals to specific communities or constituencies. You can find a list of local legal services providers at LawHelp.org/dc.

Alternatively, you can contact your local ASO (AIDS service organization) to inquire if they can give you a referral to a low cost attorney that you can consult on your matter.  If you live in small town or rural area where there is no local ASO, contact the ASO in your nearest large metropolitan area.

Hope that helps.
