Lost my job due to Covid19 and HIV meds
« on: July 27, 2020, 09:39:15 am »
Hello there,

I lost my job which I worked for 23 years due to covid 19 and most importantly that is paying for my HIV medication through medical insurance available to employees.  I am now in complete meltdown and total frustration as to how I will be getting my HIV medication.  The possibility I will be getting another job is almost non-existent due to Covid 19 and maybe other problems. I am living in the state of Virginia. My age is 52.  So, can someone here PLEASE offer me advice as to how I will be getting my HIV medication going forward.

check to find the closest Ryan White services provider and talk to that local RW administrator. (your own HIV provider/doctor could be a Ryan White provider, besides serving just clients with insurance). Or contact the state health department for more assistance. Many Ryan White programs can either cover the costs of COBRA insurance or simply help get you medical treatment and medications. Every state is different of course, so your mileage can vary. Hopefully someone from VA will have a more direct response for you. ;)

Sorry to read this. Not from US, would not have idea. But do stay calm & think positively. I am sure there are ways of getting support for medication. Life can never be a smooth journey but can be better as days goes by. Wish you best. Tks

Hi dear, I can only understand your frustration and anxiety in this situation. My suggestion is to speak to your current ID doctor and he/she should support you. What I would do is asking him/her to connect you to patient assistance programs of Pharma which will happily bridge your treatment until you are hooked up with new insurance coverage. Hope this is helpful, best Matt

in these days in the USA, hooking up with new insurance usually means hooking up with new employment which may not be happening for a lot of people for a long time in this pandemic. Ryan White, if the eligibility requirements are met, can pay for the COBRA insurance payments until the clients luckily gets a new job (and 90 days later access to insurance if a full time job), or can fill in with medications and medical visits until Medicaid, insurance, or some other payer comes through.

I totally agree with Mike.  Get yourself set up with an appointment for Ryan white, and start from there.

Sorry about the loss of your job. It has got to be devastating, but try to hang in.

You can pay to keep insurance with COBRA.  Contact former employer or insurance company.  This is probably about $600 a month.
You are e
Also eligible to enroll in your state health exchange after loosing job.
There are also Patient assistance programs contact the company that makes your hiv drug.

Also there is ADAP  that can pay for meds and for insurance premiums.

Contact an Aids Service Provider quickly.

Many of the above are time sensitive so be quick.

Not sure where you are in VA, but I'm in the Richmond area.  You could reach out to Health Brigade -- they used to be known as the Fan Free Clinic.  I bet they can help you navigate through this.  I used them alot when first diagnosed in 2005.
