Taking an old regimen for a few days...
« on: July 13, 2020, 11:41:50 am »
Hi everyone

I switched from a generic Atripla regimen to biktarvy a few months ago. Doc wanted me to start immediately which I did, so I ended up with a few leftover atripla pills. Not wanting to waste them, I decided to save them for an emergency. After my last bottle of biktarvy I started taking the old regimen just to get rid of them without consulting doc. Finally got around to mentioning it to my doc and he said I should absolutely not take them and that I should bring them into the office.

A little concerned now.. how bad is this? Does Anyone have experience with this?

If it's expired meds, then the problem is they often less effective, meaning the risk developing resistance to name one of a few issues.

Asides from that being on Biktarvy and then Atripla for a short time and back again, I suppose the doctor's concern might be interactions and prehaps developing resistance, although can't imagen that last part being a high risk if the VL has remained suppressed.

Talk to your doctor to understand their reasons for concern.

Thanks Jim.

They aren’t expired and we didn’t switch regimens for any resistance issues. So just wondered what other reason there could be that’ll cause an issue l.

I suspect resistance and interactions would be the concern, but talk to your doctor to confirm.

BTW Why did you take them for a few days? Did you run out of Biktarvy?

No I didn’t run out, I had a few days worth of atripla left after I switched over. I get free access to treatment but I REALLY didn’t want them go to waste.
