Foreigner HIV+ in Shenzhen China
« on: February 14, 2019, 03:03:20 pm »
Hi all,

I plan to work in China and obviously I can't bring that many pills to China amd soon will run out of them so I will need HIV medication there as a foreigner.

I wonder if anyone knows all about it, like where to get it in Shanghai or Shenzhen (the cities I'll be working in), is it free for foreigners or what it the cost? Are drugs there the same as in the US or different?

I no nothing about HIV treatment of foreigners in China, I do know that you can access treatment in Thailand relatively cheaply and that many people in Asia come to Bangkok for treatment.  Also I have heard that China deports foreigners who test positive for HIV.  So do your research.

Sorry I cant help you better.  If you want more information on getting treatment in Thailand there is plenty of that information on this site.

In order to get a work permit, you need to do a medical check once you arrive in China which involves a blood test. If you're found to HIV, it's unlikely (read: not possible) that you'll be granted the work permit and residence permit.

I know some ESL teachers who left China because of HIV status, some came to Thailand.   I have heard of a few expats in high level professional expat positions who were allowed work permits (Perhaps their employers had lots of power.)

Hi. I just moved back to Europe from China after 13 years. I would strongly suggest not to move to Shenzhen in China. Yes, you can smuggle the meds if you want. (Or i kept mine a yearly supply at my Hong kong doctor's place and visited him every month) But every single time you go to a doctor they will do HIV test without your knowledge.
Unless you are open about it and your company is standing behind you and fully support you i would not go through the hassle and the stress again. Plus for work visa they test you and not to mention last year the police really started to target foreigners. All of my friends who stayed are moving away from China this year.

I don't care about stigma in China on HIV but what I do care is do they give working permit to PLHIV in China or they deport them?

You should, going there means having to deal with it and, the stigma is also part of the reason VISA/Work permits have restrictions that might lead you to being asked to leave or at least denied a work permit.

Anyhow my suggestion is, why don't you reach out and check with an NGO based in China, so you have the information on the current situation.

Best, Jim

HI, i currently live in China and I do bring HIV meds into China. If you don't too many luggage, they normally don't open your luggages when you pass through the customs. I have traveled in/out of china for more than 10 times  and my luggages have never got checked. But as a precaution, I normally put my  pills in different luggage and strip off the labels. If you still worry, you can put your pills into other bottles such as Vitamin bottles. If they ask you what are those, you can tell them they are Vitamins.

Don't disclose your HIV status in China. It is true that they won't issue a work permit if you are hiv positive

Hi! I wonder if there is anyone here who's a foreigner and HIV+ and lives in Shenzhen China (or nearby) so we could connect and share the info via wechat. You can PM me.

For example, I'd love to have my VL test done in China and talk to an ID but dunno where to do it in Shenzhen anonymously... I could go to HK though, but I think it's WAY too expensive (hope I'm wrong). Although if in HK, who could recommend as to where? web site address or?

Thank you!

Hi.
Once again. If you are a foreigner in Mainland and after the first positive test it is confirmed that you are positive, the doctors are obligated to report  your status to the authorities. As i understand your medical report is available for all bureaus including police, labour bureau etc. I would not risk it. It only needs 1 person with an agenda to make your life really difficult.

Hong kong is more expensive that is true but safer. There are some really good specialists and trustable doctors who know what they are doing and you don't risk your livelihood this way. I went to Central Medical Ltd. in Princess Building in Hong Kong. The doctor there was awesome.

Also i bought my meds and did the more expensive tests in Thailand by his recommendation. It was much cheaper this way and the Thai doctor was really helpful too.

I still have their contact numbers. If you need exact address or telephone number PM me later.

currently im able to work and benefit from an employer based health care plan.  if for some reason that stops due to lay off, injury or forced retirement, i will move to thailand and pay cash for HIV care there, as this seems to be the most cost effective place in the world, not to mention alot less stigma and great living overall.  ill stay here until 65 of which point i can apply for medicare here in the states.  what i don't know is how much my HIV meds are going to cost me when im on medicare, and also at that point of a fixed income.  any help or opinions of my ideas and plans are appreciated
