Biological mechanism responsible for latent HIV reservoirs?
« on: November 18, 2018, 10:58:57 am »
From the November 16, 2018, edition of Science Daily (HIV/AIDS topics):

Headline:

Majority of HIV persistence during ART due to infected cell proliferation

Study confirms biological mechanism responsible for latent HIV reservoirs; suggests strategies for a functional HIV cure

Lede paragraph:

"A majority of the HIV-infected cells that persist in HIV-infected individuals even during suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) originated from cellular proliferation, not viral replication, according to new research published in Nature Communications."

Thanks for posting these.  This work shows the value of interdisciplinary science bringing the disciplines of oncology, immunology, ecology together.  Here is a short article on the same work written for the non-scientific audience and discussing a very small clinical trial based on the science.
