Bakesale fundraiser for HIV Ireland
« on: April 05, 2018, 03:39:23 pm »
As discussed in this thread https://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=68884.msg
Today had my bake-sale and lecture on living with HIV & HIV related stigma at work today.

I'm shattered but it was good, spoke to many people about HIV globally and in Ireland and the challenges still faced with regards to stigma. Very positive conversations and a lot of people not realizing that HIV levels are so high or the stigma was still such an issue.

Got fantastic support all in all even from some unexpected but welcome people to raise funds.

Great job, Jim.  Grand work!  I think your spell-check has a mind of its own, though.  I bet you wrote "fantastic" and it came out "fatalistic"(?).

Thanks. It was an interesting day that's for sure. I suppose people had the what we know to be average/common knowledge gaps. "Prevalence in Ireland,  Transmission, prevention, U=U"  What stood out for me was the interest and questions people had on HIV treatment & late diagnosis rates

 :)

Thanks Wade and hope you are doing well and enjoying forum retirement.

I basically told my story that living with HIV is just that living and HIV is no barrier with treatment to a "normal" life however stigma is and I shared a few issues i have had myself.

Also as my audience was mainly "straight" (ish) and Women so I told them its true in Ireland transmission rates are higher under MSM however gay guys test and treat early and benefit from that.

In Ireland its the straight women/men testing late so late they are at danger of poorer outcomes. 86% of straight people tested late or advanced stage (AIDS).Not the gay gays and 30% of msm had tested in recent years before diagnosis vs only 2.9 % of straight people who were diagnosed showing a severe lack of testing

Eyes popped out of heads, wallets opened and many said they are getting tested

I uploaded a copy in PDF if anyone cares to read it.

I listened to your radio interview and was surprised at the people not being tested because they still thought of it as a gay disease.

Thanks wade. I think you give me too much credit.

The radio show was purely a reactive thing and this was lecture & bake sale was just in the office, 400 people and all I did was talk.
