Please help- Crazy anxiety over HIV symptoms
« on: April 09, 2014, 04:18:32 PM »
I've been extremely anxious for the past week. I have brief unprotected sex almost three months ago. Last week I started out with a very mild scratch sore throat. Last Monday night I had a very bad headache and just felt unwell. I thought this was due to my seasonal allergies that occur at this time and are extremely bad. However I started feeling nauseous and had an extreme sense of fatigue and dizziness. I also had a mild rash on my chest for one day and also swollen tonsils but no sore throat. I went to my colleges health center and got tested for strep, mono, thyroid, and also had a CBC test. Everything came back normal. They did take note on my extremely high pulse and blood pressure.  Then on Friday I started feeling numbness and heaviness in my arms and legs. I went to the ER Friday night because I had never felt anything like that. The doctor ran many blood tests and everything came back normal except there was in indication that the white blood cells were active as in fighting a virus. They said they would call me with results if they found anything-which they didn't. So now it is Wednesday and the only symptoms I'm feeling are loss of apetite-which I've had through this whole experience, and swollen lymph nodes - which is what is scaring me. I've had swollen lymph nodes in the neck this whole time and a few days ago I got one in my groin area. They are still there but small and aren't painful, and I think they are decreasing in size but I'm not really sure. I also have been touching them a lot which I read might keep them swollen. Also noteworthy- I have been searching the internet more then not looking for symptoms. I am making myself sick worrying about this. I ordered an oraquick at home hiv test bit it is not here yet.  I am so convinced I have HIV and there is no other explanation . All my symptoms lead back to HIV. Keep in mind I have never had a fever or sore throat but I have had headaches. What's extremely worrying my is the unexplained swelling of my lymph nodes when there are no other symptoms. I'm so scared I can't have HIV and I can't tell my parents and my friends and my boyfriend . Also I have a minor sore/cut by my tooth on the inside. I got this yesterday and I thought it was because of a burn. There are also two flat red dots in the back/ roof of mouth. I know I can't know until I get tested but I'm so scared to and my test is not here yet. I have never felt any of these symptoms before. I don't know what I want out this since I know you can't diagnose from symptoms but I just hope for a peace of mind. I'm franking myself out so bad. Thank you.

Symptoms or lack of will not tell you anything about your HIV status. The only way to know your status is by testing. You can obtain your baseline 6 weeks post exposure and then obtain your conclusive test result 3 months post exposure.

I room the Oraquick test and it came back negative. It's been 12 weeks just 2-3 short of 3 months. Is the negative result reliable at this time?

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. Most who are infected will test positive by 6 weeks. For various reasons a small number will take longer and that is why we follow the CDC recommendation to test at 3 months for a conclusive negative result.

You results are not going to change this late in the game so congrats ... you are HIV negative .
