Getting ready for a fabulous Chicago trip also.  I'm a bit confused wondering why someone wouldn't know if their mother died?  Have they checked the obits in the local paper?  Obviously, they didn't have a close relationship so what are they attempting to accomplish?

Being honest is not wronging others, continuing the dishonesty is.

There must some type of Bureau of Vital Statistics or similar in the state in which the mother died, where they record birth and death certificates...usually it's a fee to get the actual certificate but you should be able to call them for free and find out if the document exists. Do you have anything to go on? Last known residence? also it's ssa.gov these days...where you actually able to find out if someone died? I would think even the federal government would want money for that info..

She can do a quick check at Ancestry.com if she knows particulars like, date of birth, last residence and of course her mother's name:

"He is my oldest child. The shy and retiring one over there with the Haitian headdress serving pescaíto frito."
