Hello Doctor
I performed oral sex on two guys who I found out afterwards are HIV +. I'm a little worried that I could have caught something. Neither of the two reached completion at all during the encounter and neither did I. I also received oral from both of them. Again no completion. I did not engage in any anal intercourse. We also kissed. I have read on a lot of websites that HIV can be contracted through oral sex although this forum only suggests anal sex/mother baby and drug use . . . Do I have anything at all to worry about?? Anything at all??

Hi Tom Tom . You didn't have risk .

There have been no fewer than three separate serodiscordant couples studies (where one person is HIV positive, the other negative.) These couples were tracked for three. five and ten years. The couples used condoms for penetrative vaginal and anal sex, but NO BARRIER at all for oral sex. Any kind of oral sex.

These studies yielded NO infections.

Your saliva contains numerous property's that damage hiv and render it unable to
infect , this is why people in serodiscordant relationships enjoy oral sex without fear of infecting or becoming infected with HIV .

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Thank you Doctor for your response and for taking the time to answer my question.
Your reply puts my mind at ease. Fortunately, (given your reply), I have never engaged in unprotected intercourse. I will however make an appointment now for a complete test to check for HIV and all other common STD's and STI's but your reply has eased my mind and this is a HUGE relief for me.

If you're sexually active getting tested regularly is a smart idea. As Jeff has said it's much easier to catch other STDs than HIV.

As far as HIV is concerned, if you use condoms properly everytime for anal intercourse you will be very effectively protected.

Thank you. Fustrating that other websites and forums advise oral sex IS a risk in catching HIV.

To be clear , I'm not a doctor but did play one with some of my friends when I was kid  ;) .

I'm a volunteer who is qualified to give risk assessments where HIV is of concern .
