Additionally, the following excerpt from the news article passes into the pitiful pit as the workers try to use condoms as protection against HIV:


...For example, possession of condoms often is used as evidence of sex workers’ guilt, causing many prostitutes to avoid carrying them and elevating the risk of disease. Abuses by health agencies — such as coerced HIV testing and disclosure of HIV status — also have made women distrustful of health officials, according to the report...

That's not just in China-in New York police arrest sex workers who carry condoms (i.e. condoms are "proof" they are prostitutes is the argument).

As far as abuse, when I was in that "business," none of us were safe where rape was concerned and if we reported it to the police, we were just told we should expect it with the business we were in (this was in South Bend, IN).  This resulted in hardly anyone reporting rape.  Egregious injustice.
