New pneumonia vaccine (prevnar 13)
« on: October 18, 2012, 08:04:38 PM »

Anybody have any thoughts on above topic concerning this new recommendation for the Prevnar 13 vaccine?

I think i got the regular pneumonia vaccine about a year ago, but wonder if i should ask my doctor about this one.  i dont think walgreens  or CVS have this vaccine if i'm not mistaken.

i'm all about vaccines if there is one available. i sure dont want pneumonia if i can anyhow prevent it.

I just got the ppv-23 vaccine a month ago.  The recommendations say if you get the 23 vaccine first you have to wait a year before getting the 13 vaccine, so I got time to think it over  :)

I was reading that the ppv23 vaccine only prevents about 20 percent of pneumonia illness  but the 13 vaccine prevents about 50 percent so it seems more effective.

Probably a good thing to consider.

I just read this story, before coming here to the forums.  I had the ppv-23 almost 4 years ago, so I could get the new one.  However, I was thinking about getting my booster a year early.  I had gotten it when my CD4 was just 171, and I've wondered whether I created a good response.  My CD4 did rebound within a month of getting that vaccination, so it may not have been an issue.

So, I guess I'll have to look into this--whether to get the new one now and just wait another year (like I would have) for the ppv-23.  As I read this, if I would have gotten the booster a year early, I would have to wait a year for the new one?
