Some advice and risk assessment, please. Much Appreciated.

Dear all,

On late Wed 26 Sep/early Thursday AM 27 Sep 2012, I had a sexual encounter with a commercial sex worker. It was the first time I had sexual intercourse with someone other than my wife.

There was no kissing, but there was nipple sucking and licking.

The was unprotected fellatio received for several minutes with no ejaculation and I gave cunninglingus without deep entry - only the tip of the tongue.

Vaginal intercourse was protected with the use of a condom and post-coitus I checked the condom for breakage /leakage - there was none.


Question 1: What is my risk of contracting HIV?

Question 2: What is my risk of contracting other sexually transmitted infections?


I was very worried and within 72 hours, on Friday around 2pm I visited a clinic and had my blood tested for a baseline negative.

I asked about PEP and the doctor did not advise if it was necessary. So as a precaution I opted for it.

Currently I am on a triple drug combination of Combivir® (zidovudine 300mg/lamivudine 150mg) 1 tablet twice a day AND Kaletra® (lopinavir 200mg/rtionavir 50mg) 2 tablets twice a day.

I have been given 14 days dosage and am told to visit 2 weeks later to receive another 14 days, should all be ok.

I am starting to feel some side effects of the drugs - watery stools, indigestion, vertigo and nausea. I read from another forum that I actually do not need to be on PEP.

Question 3: Please advise is PEP is necessary in my case?

Question 4: Having taken about 7 times of the doses, is it ok for me to stop now?

I enjoy a healthy sex life with my wife, who is currently pregnant.



Question 5: Is it still ok to have intercourse with my wife?

Question 6: What are the risks and precautions, if any?

This is absolutely NO an HIV situation in any way whatsoever. Wearing a condom for penetrative sex solved that issue, and otal none of the other activities put you at any risk for HIV.

Sadly the same cannot be said for other STDs.While there is a rather LOW risk for contracting other STDs, that risk is there. I would recommend a complete STD panel at the appropriate times (most STDs are detectable within a couple of weeks, but syphilis has a three month window period) before having unprotected intercourse with your spouse again.

3. NO! Why would you need PEP when you did NOT have a risk?

4. Yes. You do NOT need PEP.

5. Again, you did NOT have a risk for hiv infection.

6. Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse outside your marriage, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!!!

Dear Ann,

Thanks for your reply. I guess I will stop the PEP medication then... It's making me feel really terrible - getting pretty bad vertigo, nausea and indigestion.

Also would using a condom help to prevent other STDs other than HIV?
