I am losing my mind right now. About a week ago i had unprotected oral (received it) from a female sex worker. I also had protected insertive vaginal sex with her. I am experiencing a ton of anxiety and despair that i have contracted HIV. Someone please help!!!!

Neither getting a blowjob or having protected sex are risks for HIV.

No one in the history of the panemic has ever gotten HIV from receiving oral sex. It's never even been implicated. Saliva is not only not infectious, but it contains over a dozen elements that neutralize HIV. In fact, there have been three long-term studis of serodiscordant couples (where one partner is positive and one is negative) in which the couples used protection for penetrative vaginal and anal sex, but no barriers at al for any form of oral sex.

In the three, five and ten-year studies, not a single infection was ever traced to oral sex. Not one.

You had absolutely no risk for HIV in the scenario you described.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Anxious,

Good luck. You do realise, don't you, that hiv is a virus and a virus cannot think? It's not even alive as we think of life. It's more like a little piece of machinery. I hope you also realise that it's not a punishment sent down from "on high" to wreck your life after having sex. It's just a virus - one that we know how it is and is not transmitted. And it's NOT transmitted in the ways you are worrying about. Seriously.

Seeing a therapist will likely help you understand that you don't need to be punished for acting on your sexual urges, provided you treat your sexual partner with respect. We are hard-wired to have sex. It's normal, it's natural and it's human. So yes, please do get yourself into therapy. Only good things will come of it.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!!!

Ann

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
