Medication and becoming overweight
« on: July 05, 2012, 07:54:59 pm »
I got weighed at my HIV  clinic this week and my weight has jumped up to 85kg. Two years ago I weighed 65kg. Now, I definitely needed to put some weight on but my  regular weight was always around 72/73kg.

In the last few months I've modified my diet to cut back on fat and sugars, and include more vegetables and fruit. I've also reduced my alcohol intake, which is way down compared to my consumption a couple of years ago.

I've always been a slim-Jim, so given the the drop in my calorie intake, it seems the most likely culprit is the HIV medication.

Would be interested to hear from others who've put on excessive weight soon after starting medication and what, if anything, you were able to do to reverse it.

Weight gain is a tough one. Especially a fit trim look everywhere else but that dreaded pot belly. Those extra 5 - 10 lbs around the gut. I've tried and tried. Dieted, jogged, hiked, sit ups and I've nearly given up. When I was younger jogging and or exercise made a big difference within days or weeks. Now with meds and also add in age (50's), I pretty much have given up. Nothing works. Age may have a lot to do with it, but stubborn weight hanging on around the gut has got to be meds related. And exercise with diet has no effect at all on this area. It's either liposuction or trying that new pill that reduces weight side effects from meds.
Just another curse living with HIV.

I have put on 9 kg in 2 years despite strict diet/excercise, etc. the trend started 1-2 months after starting the meds.

''It's either liposuction or trying that new pill that reduces weight side effects from meds.''

Which pill is that?

Egrifta.

Egrifta was approved in November 2010 to treat lipohypertrophy and is to be sold in the United States by EMD Serono. In clinical trials, Egrifta was able to reduce visceral gut fat by about 15 percent on average. When people stop taking Egrifta, the gut fat returns, so at this point therapy will need to continue indefinitely. Though Egrifta has fewer side effects than Serostim, at least over a one year period—which is the longest that it has been studied—there are some concerns remaining that it could increase the risk for developing diabetes. Also, it isn't yet clear whether Egrifta's effect will result in a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, which can occur when people are able to reduce visceral fat by other methods, such as diet and exercise. EMD Serono is expected to announce a patient assistance program in early 2011 for people who don't have health insurance and who can't afford the drug. (source)

Had you lost weight in the period leading up to starting treatment? I've been told that HIV is a 'slimming disease' so, if that's true, it's possible that many people could lose weight before they commence ARVs.

infection date and weight being known, I can say I put on 4 kg since infection and now, (1 year of infection - no HAART, 2 years HAART)

hope this helps clarify

I started meds at 174 pounds in 1998...now 168 but I have noticed lately that i am starting to get a bit of a more rounded body even though I am pretty active.  I have always had a sweet tooth so that may account for the change in my mass...unfortunately when I do gain weight it is always in my face and not my ass where i could use some.  But then again at my age of 57 no one seems interested anyway.  Who needs a bf when you have chocolate...it is always faithful, never has a head ache and is damn sure easier to get.

I put on weight in the 4 years on meds and was always a slim jim yep. But, I'm getting older.  The weight has not been obviously problematic HIV/HAART issues like fat deposits. Its actually a pleasant all over regular fleshyness. I'd say I look like a  normal and trim guy my age.  Asked two different highly specialized ID docs about HIV/HAART and my weight gain and neither think its much to do with meds, more to do with aging, diet, lifestyle.  I have reduced, in fact, since I paid more attention to these things.   Thats my perspective.  It does/did feel a bit like a chemically induced plumpness!  Kind of like a plump chicken. Most of my life I felt comfortable as a scrawny barnyard rooster. But according to the docs, its really not basically about the HAART.

All I will say is when I go out to eat with local pozzies I see how much food they scarf down. It's amazing. My doctor explicitly tells me not to lose any weight. I'm 6 ft and 175 lbs, though I would prefer to be 5 lbs. lighter.

Why exactly?

Because at 6 foot and 175 pounds his weight is almost perfect dependant on his body composition.

That. And also the additional context that I had medically diagnosed wasting during a five year period, though it's now been 8 years since I gained it back.

I have put on about 8kg in about a year on arvs... A lot of it due to not being as active as the side effects hit me quite badly (sore muscles etc - on better mix now which helps) but the gut fat is noticeable and I have gained a lot of weight.  On my 1.76cm frame it shows and I am working my buff off to get back down to 82kg odd...

But yes I put on a lot of fat and all around the belly, buttocks region... Hate it

I'm battling the belly these days . I think the combination of age , years of HIV meds and insulin for my diabetes are making it really hard for me to keep it in check . My diet could be drastically better also .

You young folks would do well to watch the diet and fatty foods some of us LTS were told to eat all we wanted to eat back in the day . I'm serious , my doctor told me back in the 80's to get some fat on the bones in case I got sick again . I bet they don't give that advice anymore LOL .
