Not sure what to make of all this...
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:32:19 AM »
Hello Everyone,

Thank you for all your stories, you are all very brave.

So here is my story...

In 2007 I broke up with my boyfriend and began to have random sexual encounters with men, some protected, some unprotected. I was young and stupid and HIV was not a worry at this time, these encounters would continue through 2008 and there were probably 10+ encounters, some protected, some unprotected. I would attend my gyno and was checked for STD's repeatedly and was fine. This would end around Jan/Feb 2009 until I had another sexual encounter for which I am 90% was protected in late March 2009. In June I was tested again for HIV and the results were negative. I took this as a lesson and I have been in a monogamous relationship since August 2009.

Here is my concern now, I feel as though there was not enough time in between my encounter and the test and I feel like the test was wrong for some reason. It would have been around 10 weeks, but I'm pretty sure it was protected. Any antibodies would have been detected at this time, correct?

And this negative test also account for all of my prior sexual encounters right? Seeing as how they were mostly 6 months + prior to my test?

I have made an appointment to get tested again just to put this all behind me because I am just so terribly frightened. I feel as though somehow the test was incorrect, it was a blood ELISA test btw.

Any feedback or advice would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.

You can test 3 months post your last unprotected sex to obtain your conclusive result.

Getting tested again is a good idea. HIV status is not something you ought to be wondering about.

You say you have been in a monogamous relationship for sometime. You don't mention if you are using condoms or not. The only time when a couple can safely dispense with using them is when they have tested negative together at a reliable testing point, i.e. 3 months after the most recent unprotected incident. Assuming they are in  a committed monogamous relationship, they can safely dispense with using condoms. That's the safer way for handling the issue.

Okay thank you and I can pretty much put any previous encounters worries out of my head because they were 4+ months prior to the negative HIV test?

Yes, that would have been a time frame which would have allowed for a reliable and conclusive negative result.
