HIV medical research?
« on: November 21, 2011, 02:07:40 pm »
First, I apologise if this isn't posted in the correct area.

I live in London and would like to become involved in any HIV cure research. I am not HIV+, but would like to get involved in any way I can.

Can anyone suggest a way?

I have reason to believe I may be resistant to HIV infection, how can I test this and could this help with any research?

Thank you

Hi skips

well, the time u graduate, get your Ph.D. and start to be involved in promising research, I'm afraid (functional) cure(s) will have been already found. ;D Sorry

Now if u still fell motivated, many of the biological sciences (the science that studies living organisms) will do the trick.

Googling "tests for CCR5-Δ32" will give you a list of commercials companies to test your "immunity"

Thx for your interest. Keep it up.

John

Thanks for the information.

I didn't mean whether I could help find a cure personally. I'm not a medical scientist. I wondered if I could donate blood, take part in trials, test drugs etc. Is there anything I can do by volunteering my own time to help?

Its a nice gesture.

Do you want to help generally, as in benevolence?  Well, contact different agencies and institutions where you live, that deal with aspects of HIV, and ask them.

Also there is always just giving money, which after all IS your time - if you earned it.

Or do you want to help people you know?  Maybe you are worried about your friend.  You can be a good friend.  That's already helping.

The possibility that you are CCR5-Δ32 - seems to be something you may want to know for some reason or other.  It might not be of value to others.

The offer to test drugs does not seem very likely as your way to help - but you never know.

The only way you would find out if any of this is useful in HIV research is if you were in contact with people doing it.   That's my guess, anyway.

Skip, you could probably participate in hiv vaccine trials. Google it. Also, have a look at this website: HIV Vaccine Trials Network. There are likely to be many other websites out there with similar information.
