Long term disability insurance - any recommendations?
« on: October 06, 2011, 11:15:48 PM »
Hello, I was recently my long term disability insurance (LTDI) by my company's carrier due to a "pre-existing condition" (hiv).  A counselor suggested I instead get private LTDI designed for people with a pre-existing conditions.  Allegedly this private insurance, although not cheap, is higher quality.

I've been doing a ton of Google searches and asking around but have had no luck finding a LTDI carrier that works with HIV+ folk.  Does anybody have any recommendations?

You won't find one.  A person with HIV is an actuarial nightmare, and even though many of us are going to live nearly normal lifespans, insurers don't have the data or are using historical data to deem us undesirable.

If it's something you really need, start looking for a new job that includes LTDI as part of standard benefits ( not as an optional add-on that you can buy into, which as you've found out requires going through underwriting... )

That said,  have you considered just saving the money that you would be able to put into LTDI premiums [possibly in a retirement savings type account; either a Roth or Traditional IRA]? So you could support yourself while trying to get on SSDI or to supplement SSDI income if you were ever to become disabled.
