Looking for some advice
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:30:49 AM »

i am stressing and panicking today and looking for some advice and understanding, I have no one else to talk to about my situation.

Before I start please understand I am worried about offending people who have been in higher risk situations as i know mine is lower risk but still, I cannot ignore what is happening to my body. I am also aware this could be a mental issue, but it might not and i don't know were else to turn.

i'm female, I had been with the same man for 9 years, 11 days ago i had sex with someone new. We used a condom but 6 days later I experienced swelling and thrush like symptoms, this suggests to me that some sperm may have got inside me. over the past 3 days I have been experiencing painful glands in my neck, sore ears, and pain in my lower abdomen and sore joints.  I have convinced myself i have contracted hiv, I can feel it attacking my body. i woke up today and my armpits are throbbing, I'm convinced this is it spreading thorough my lymphnodes. i feel like there is something tight tied around my neck, this is all new symptoms and unusual for me. i am also being sick and have no appetite but this is normal for me in stressfull situations. The man i slept with is rather promiscuous, but i thought I was being sensible by us using a condom, I now feel so stupid and that i have put myself at risk.

i am so worried about my 2 young children, I need to protect them. My lips are dry and cracked, im worried about kissing them. Also I am being he worst mother the past few days I am short, snappy and I cannot concentrate on anything with them, these thoughts are killing me. How long do I have to wait to know for sure? i cant continue for 5 more weeks with these thoughts. i am fearing waking up each day with new symptoms.

is it too late for me to stop it with some sort of post exposure meds?

i'm sorry if i come across nieve and uneducated, ive tried researching but im still at a loss as to what to think/do.

Any advice and understanding would be greatly appreciated. I really value your time. Thank you.

You never had an exposure by having condom protected sex and your symptoms have nothing to do with HIV.

Thanks for your reply. From the information I have read online, I thought my symptoms were consistent with contracting the virus a couple of weeks ago. I guess I find it hard to accept it's a coincidence after sleeping with a new partner.

I have been reading through a lot of posts here, it must be frustrating to continually tell people over and over again that they are not at risk. Looking back at my post it seems nieve and silly, although I'm still anxious, I appreciate your time. Many Thanks.

If there has been a genuine risk such as unprotected vaginal or anal intercourse, neither the presence nor the absence of "symptoms" will ever tell you anything accurately about your HIV status. Only an HIV test at 13 weeks afterwards can give you a conclusive negative result.

But in your case testing is not necessary because you did use a condom for intercourse. They provide very effective protection against HIV transmission. You are worrying unnecessarily.

Whatever is causing your symptoms is not about HIV. If the symptoms persist you should discuss them with your doctor. This is not an HIV situation.

You're welcome. Get on with your life now and if you bothersome symptoms you should discuss them with your doctor.
