My Doctor and I hugged today...
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:12:50 am »
I went for my usual every 6 months doctor visit today.  Had labs done previous week.  Went over everything.  Still doing well.  Viral load read 20 from previously being undetectable for many years.  Doctor said "no biggie", you're still doing quite well.  He has been my specialist for about 15 years now.  We have always gotten along as he is very pleasant, easy-going and extremely smart.

He told me that his last child went off to college and that he and his wife noticed that the house has gotten quiet. I mentioned to him that is the empty nest syndrome you hear about.  By contrast, I told him that my mother and father often said that they danced a jig after the last of their 10 children who lived at home left to go out on their own.

My doctor and I have always shook hands at the start and end of my visits.  For some reason today, that just did not seem good enough.  We spontaneously hugged each other.

For once the roles were reversed and my doctor told me in a heartfelt tone "Thank You".

That's a really sweet story, Tampa. My doctor and I are also close - nothing beats a doctor's hug when you know it is heart-felt.

What a great story. There's something very special about a hug. Not too intimate, but intimate enough so the strength of the hug conveys a lot of meaning.  8)

15 years?  That's longer than most friendships.  It's great you have a doctor that you like on several levels.  The last couple of years I'm becoming a strong advocate of making sure you have a doctor you connect with.  I didn't learn that until I met my current doctor 3 years ago and I'm awestruck about him in many ways.  He has become a friend as well as my doctor.  We absolutely know they have our best interests in mind.

Ooops, D, you and I both didn't notice that this thread is in the LTS forum. You slap my wrist and I'll slap yours, deal?

Sorry guys. :-\

To everyone, thanks for all the nice comments.

I believe my Doctor is a keeper (an understatement). :D

Note to Ann: I hope it was OK to start this thread in the LTS forum since my HIV diagnosis goes back to 1985 as I have stated before.

Take care.

Tampa, I know you're an LTS. It was D and me who shouldn't have posted here. I normally only post here when I need to do some moderating.
