Poll: Catholics like gays more than Protestants
      Stewart Who?, Gay.com U.K.
      Monday, July 31, 2006 / 11:48 AM
SUMMARY: Eighty-eight percent of Northern Irish residents believe there should be no discrimination against gays, according to a hopeful new poll.

An Ipsos-MORI survey has rather surprisingly revealed that three-quarters of Northern Ireland residents say they are tolerant of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals and 88 percent believe there should be no discrimination against them.

The poll was based on a face-to-face survey of 1,009 people, questioned at 47 locations across Northern Ireland during February.

The survey shows sharply differing attitudes of Protestants compared to Catholics.

The glut of homophobia is to be found in the Protestant Evangelical community. 14 percent of Protestants admitted they were "not at all accepting" of gays.

Evidence of the pope's waning influence can be found in the fact that 83 percent of Catholics said they were "very accepting" of gay men, lesbians and bisexuals, compared with only 70 percent of Protestants.

The encouraging results of the survey were complemented by moves by Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain to outlaw sexual-orientation discrimination in restaurants, clubs, pubs, hotels and B&Bs. Hain said that organizations who support the gay community would receive financial backing.

"The government's vision is for a fair society founded on equal opportunities for all, respect for the dignity and worth of each person and mutual respect between communities.

"Since 1997, this government has taken steps UK-wide to achieve that goal and these new proposals are a further step along that road," Hain said.

Northern Ireland already enjoys anti-discrimination legislation, but the public-accommodation proposals would close a current loophole.

They would bring Northern Ireland in line with Great Britain, where similar proposals are being considered.

This week sees the start of celebrations for Belfast Pride. The Belfast Pride Parade, to be held Aug. 5, is the piece de resistance of Pride Week; it attracted more than 5,000 people last year.

Following the parade (note, they don't call it a march, as Belfast has quite enough of them already) there will be an all-day party in Writer's Square.

I can't categorically prove it with any polls, but my personal experience is that Irish-American (practicing) Catholics are some of the most homophobic groups in the U.S., contrary to the Catholics in Ireland.  Ironic.  They've controlled the hierarchy and bishoprics in the U.S. for over two centuries.

The word comes from the Greek words φως phos ("light"), and γραφίς graphis ("stylus", "paintbrush") or γραφή graphê, together meaning "drawing with light" or "representation by means of lines".
