False Positive ??! Scared...
« on: November 19, 2010, 07:41:58 AM »
Hello, sorry for my poor english. I'm a 21yr old boy from Malaysia, 9 weeks ago i had sex with a prostitute from Thailand, we performed oral and vaginal sex with the same condom, then hand job without condom. 3 weeks after the event, i developed symptoms, a mild fever for three days, rashes(but is normal pimples according to doctor), sore throat, hot and cold chills that comes and goes until now, no swollen nodes & no night sweats. Due to the ilness, I've ran somes HIV tests :

1) HIV ag/ab test @ 25days  - Neg
2) Rapid HIV Blood Test @ 6weeks - Neg

But the 2day i went for my 9weeks test, the test was a Rapid HIV Blood Test same as the 6weeks one. After 10mins+, the doctor and i noticed a FAINT LINE besides the sympol 1 (HIV-1) on the test kit, he said that maybe I'm really positive and take my blood to test for ELISA at the lab. I'm really freaking out, the test will probably return in few days time. I am very scared right now. Few questions pop up from my mind regard my current status.

a) Are my symptoms is related to HIV ??
b) Is that really my 3rd test is a False-positive since i tested negative few weeks before, or it is because of my sore throat that have not cured until now (seroconversion) ??

Help to answer my questions pls, I'm very affraid, I'm having my final exams next week and i can't concentrate study at all.

Will be thankful for your responses.

You didn't have a risk of contracting HIV in the situations you've summitted.

A faint line is usually a false positive and it WILL be a false positive in your case as you did not have a risk for hiv infection. I'm quite sure your blood test will come back with negative results.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Hi...my 9th week HIV test came back negative (HIV ag/ab). But today my testing for other STD's, HSV-2 came back positive!!! (Low positive with Antibody IgG of 2.1). That's really scared me, do i need any further testing for my HIV again?? since HSV2 tested positive....

Those are two separate issues. Testing positive for HSV-2 does not invalidate your negative HIV test. And a negative HIV test at 9 weeks is a very strong assurance that you will test negative again at 13 weeks for HIV, particularly because you didn't have a real risk for HIV to begin with.

Other STDs are much easier to acquire than HIV. Discuss your HSV-2 test result with your doctor. Re-testing for that might be a good idea since  it was a low positive.
