The Liverpool Maritime Museum is currently hosting an exibition called  HELLO SAILOR! Gay life on the ocean wave I highly recommmend that you check out the webpages dedicated to this event - most interesting! I imagine it will be of special interest to our family air stewards. Be sure to check out the audio files as well. ;)

Hey Luv,

Great site, I had no idea and the language of Polari was really interesting.  Thanks for the heads up.

Hey! I'm glad folks are finding this interesting - I certainly did, especially the info on Polari. Some of the words have found their way into everyday language and most of them I thought were Scouse slang - Scouse being what Liverpudlians speak. It makes sense though, as Liverpool has a strong tradition of sending men to sea.

I also thought the story of the two men who became a couple was very touching. It cracked me up how one of them ended up at sea on the wrong boat - I've heard of this sort of thing happening before and it very nearly happened to me once when I was at the fishing. :o

I have a clinic appointment next Tuesday (wish me luck, I get my results from my last blood draw six weeks ago) and if I have time, I'll nip down to the docks where the LMM resides and check this exhibition out first hand and report back to you all.

And I changed the title of this post to reflect what it's about. Thought I added the history blurb when I first posted it but I must have been having a brainfog moment. :D

Pretty interesting. I discovered polari when I lived in the East End. It was big still with the comedians who played at the Hackney Empire. From my understanding , like cockney there are alot of Rom words thrown in. Rom the language of Eastern European gypsys.
One word you all know from this language-pal for brother.
