Infection and Oral Risk?
« on: February 04, 2010, 11:26:47 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have a question about an incident I had about 2-3 weeks ago. I performed oral sex on two men, neither of which ejaculated in my mouth. I didn't have any mouth issues that I was aware of at the time. However, last week I went to the dentist who told me that I apparently have an infection in my first molar/gum area. I had my wisdom teeth removed four months ago and it looks like the gum and bone tissue have not fully filled in yet which I guess created a space for an infection to form.

I am worried that I might have had this infection at the time of my incident, and if so, do you think this would warrant getting an HIV test? Did it make a big difference in terms of risk? I test regularly, always use condoms for anal sex, and know that oral is low risk in general, but this incident in particular is worrying me because of the possible presence of the infection. Please let me know what you think and thank you so much in advance.

Hi Velario,

No, I don't think what you have described warrants testing nor further concern on your part. Your saliva contains over a dozen elements and proteins which very effectively prevent the transmission of viable HIV.

Other STDs are much easier to acquire than HIV, so we do recommend that anyone who is sexually active ought to regularly have a full STD panel done. That means at least once a year just as a precaution.

This time out I don't see cause for further concern on your part about HIV.
