HIV Research Study
Northwestern University

We are conducting a research study on the effects of HIV infection on the brain and are looking for volunteers who have been recently diagnosed with HIV.  The study is funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and has the approval of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Northwestern University.

-The study will involve an initial evaluation and a second, follow-up evaluation, 2 years later.

-Each evaluation will include:
          -an MRI of the brain
          -examination by a board-certified neurologist
          -tests of cognitive function
-questionnaires about your state of mind and level of functioning
          -lab tests

-You will receive $100.00 to help cover your time and travel expenses for the baseline evaluation and $100.00 for the 2 year follow-up evaluation.

-These procedures usually require 2 separate appointments.  The entire evaluation will take 3-4 hours of your time.

It you are interested in volunteering and think you would qualify, or if you want more information, please contact study coordinator Renee Ochs at 312-926-0957 or r-ochs@northwestern.edu or study coordinator Linda Reisberg, RN, at 312-695-0083 or l-reisberg@northwestern.edu.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
