Got work? Go crazy!
« on: October 11, 2009, 04:48:15 AM »
I don't know what to do about this -- I don't know if it's a complicated mental block or just a very specialized form of laziness.

I'm not that depressed, I'm really not -- except when I'm on deadline! Give me an assignment to finish, and suddenly my head is full of all manner of morbid and dark obsessions. Instead of getting my work done I'm sitting in a chair at five a.m. with my head full of ghastly images.

What does the forum say? Are dark thoughts just my weird way of procrastinating? Or does the stress of a deadline bring out all this stuff up from under the surface?

Procrastination runs in my family.
From what shrinks have said to me, and from what I've read about neurobiology, it may be coded in your brain literally phsically, and thus you have a prediisposition and you can either learn to overcome it or suffer.
I think you are right to observe that it may not be about depression.  It can be a symptom of "mental exhaustion", just as depression is.
I'd work it out with a psychiatrist... I think you need a doctor by the way and not a therapist to get to route and workaround on such matters.

You're right, but -- I gotta get set up with a steady doctor for my regular medical stuff before I can think about psych help.

I'm in thorough disarray!
