Life insurance
« on: August 09, 2006, 05:52:51 PM »
Has anyone newly tested successfully found a long-term life insurance policy? Every avenue continues to indicate it's impossible, but read that the Dutch government has recently announced companies in Holland could not discriminate against HIV+ applicants and that people living with diabetes are equally likely to live as long as those with HIV. Are there states in the U.S. that take the same approach? I want to be sure to take advantage of this while I'm young, working and healthy.

Thanks for everyone's advice!

This does look promising, though their website says the only restriction is that you must be between 40 and 80 (depending on which state you live in).  Judging by his photo, I'd say he's got a ways to go   ;)  I, on the other hand, only have 10 months (and my 40th birthday is a Friday the 13th... now that's going to be fun).

I've seen a commercial on TV offering insurance with terms like this (no questions, no exam, 40-80) but unfortunately I don't remember who --  I wanna say AARP but I don't think that's it.

I have it.  It's available from AARP up to $15,000 term life insurance with no medical exam or questions.  You do have to be an AARP member... meaning you must at least be 50 years old.

Actually, IIRC it was Colonial Penn.  I'll check into that to confirm, but I know for sure that -- whoever it was -- they offered it to 40-80 year olds, because I remember thinking at the time it would be a solution for me.

{EDIT} Well, Colonial Penn it ain't.  Their guaranteed acceptance starts at 50.  So I dunno who it was... ugh.  Hopefully I'll see that ad again soon.

I already have  a $100,000 policy I got BEFORE I was +. I'm glad I did that back then when I thought I was invincible. My partner, who is neg but has leukemia, diabetes and you name it was turned down. Then a short while ago my employer (we both work at the same place) started life insurance with OPEN enrollment (no questions asked). So I got another $70,000 on myself and my partner got $80,000. That was a very lucky break!!!  My goal was to be able to pay off everything including the house if something happened to one of us. Now we are covered if that happens. And a huge weight off my shoulders.

Well ChaplinGuy, I don't know what you do as a career, but
here's a suggestion. If you are open to it, take a job with the
Federal government.  They have strict guidelines against
discrimination in any way. While I was employed at the post office
I carried almost a quarter of a million in life insurance thru them.
I disclosed my positive status upon being hired and they could
not deny me the same health and life insurance as they offered
to all other employees at the same premiums.
I recently left the usps to search another carreer line, but I assure
you that my next job will also be a federal job so that I don't
have the insurance woes which seem to plague so many of us.
Good luck. I hoped this helped.
By the way, I hated most of my postal employment. I
wouldn't recommend that branch of federal service. The stress
was harder on my health than anything else has ever been.
