Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven)
« on: July 17, 2008, 05:11:56 AM »
I am currently seeing a Homeopathic DR.  Recently he gave me this medication.  I have never heard of it.  I tried to research it but I don't quiet understand what it says.

"Korean medicinal plants inhibiting to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) fusion.
[My paper] Young-Su Chang, Eun-Rhan Woo
College of Pharmacy, Chosun University, Kwangju 501-759, Republic of Korea.
In order to find novel anti-HIV agents from natural products, 80 MeOH extracts of Korean plants were applied to a syncytia formation inhibition assay, which is based on the interaction between the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120/41 and the cellular membrane protein CD4 of T lymphocytes. The most potent HIV-1 fusion inhibition was shown by the stem bark of Ailanthus altissima with 74.9 +/- 4.4% at a concentration of 100 microg/mL.
Mesh-terms: Ailanthus; HIV Infections :: drug therapy; HIV-1 :: drug effects; Anti-HIV Agents :: administration & dosage; Anti-HIV Agents :: pharmacology; Anti-HIV Agents :: therapeutic use; Female; Hela Cells :: drug effects; Human; Korea; Medicine, Traditional; Membrane Fusion :: drug effects; Phytotherapy; Plant Bark; Plant Extracts :: administration & dosage; Plant Extracts :: pharmacology; Plant Extracts :: therapeutic use; Plants, Medicinal; Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; "

If anyone has heard of it or knows anything about it can you please let me know.  Thank You

Heh. You're being had.

If the preparation you're talking about was dispensed by a homeopath then it will almost certainly contain no active ingredient whatsoever, thus your question is moot.

He gave it to you, or sold it to you? I suspect he sold it to you, for a hefty sum.

This plant has not been proven to do anything at all about hiv, so unless you don't mind being used as a guinea pig, you're wasting your money.

I hope you're also seeing an hiv specialist, in addition to the quack homeopath. I also hope you've told the hiv doc what the homeopath has been having you take. Just because something is "herbal" doesn't mean it's safe or without side effects.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
