I had a crazy imagination when I was little.

I think I was crazier then than I am now. (Whoa.)

Am I the only person that used to reinterpret things when he was a little kid?

The thing that sticks out most in my mind was when I had to learn the Pledge of Allegiance before I started kindergarten. I was so confused. Because I would visualize what I was saying as I said it, and the way it sounded to me and my lack of ability to understand what I was talking about totally screwed things up.

I understood the "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America." part, but I didn't know what allegiance meant. So that was sort of odd. "And to the republic-" And I thought, what is the republic? And the "for which it stands part" was where things got weird. Because I heard "for witches stands". And pictured green, pointy hatted witches standing on stools for some reason with warts on their noses and all of that stuff. "One nation, under God." Turned into "One nation, under dog." And then I had this picture in my mind of like all these dogs laying down outside the white house.  :-\. "Indivisible." Did wind up being the classic "invisible". Invisible? What's invisible? Aahh! And by the time I got to "With liberty and justice for all." I really wasn't sure what sort of twisted thing these people were making me recite.

No wonder I'm so screwed up now.  ::)

But for THAT reason I think kids shouldn't have to recite anything they don't understand.

we scar children greatly with these things; unforgiveable, really, & there's probably a lawsuit in there, somewhere..

as a small person, living (briefly) in east africa, i remember being made to recite the Lord's Prayer in school assembly...in my little mind, "deliver us from evil" became " deliver us from Ebu's"...a small garage outside of Nairobi, & probably not quite the lair of satan the good book describes..
