i am deeply sorry for the loss of your friend.  It sounds like the grieving process will be difficult and painful for you.  Keep us posted so we can give you an empathetic ear and our full support.  For Kevin, "the strife is o'er" in the words of that famous Easter hymn.  You might recall the line in the Book of Revelations where we are told that in death, there will be no more sorrow and no more tears.  He knows joy that you and I can only anticipate with our faith.  I will pray for you and Kevin's family.  In my faith tradition, I can say you now have a new saint, a new citizen of Heaven, to pray for to support you.  No doubt this will not diminish your grief, nor should it.  Healing will take time...and we are never fully healed in this life.  Kevin was blessed to have such a good friend.

Update, Tuesday evening:

Well, I made it through today.  It was tough, but I did pretty good.   I was so proud of his Mother, the one who is well into Alzheimer's.....she was dressed nicely, had her hair done, and spoke politely and sensibly to everyone there.

This will be another post for another time, but today reinforced something in my mind:   we all need to make our final wishes known, and PLAN AHEAD.   The reason I say this, is that some things that went down today were so NOT KEVIN (i.e. a white coffin, with silver angels on the corners, with a white lining, and being laid out in a white shirt...looked like a big chest type freezer).    Of course, it didn't really matter, because he was no longer there.   But I can imagine he would have rolled his eyes (or worse) if he had been there !

Thanks again to everyone for the love and support.

Alan, I couldn't agree more with getting our "final plans" well, finalized ahead of time.  My cremation and memorial service is all paid for, but I suppose I should think about what I want the content of it to be (the service).  Still thinking about you.......
