Travel insurance for Medicare covered individual?
« on: October 07, 2007, 11:14:24 AM »
I think this topic has been discussed previously, but I can't remember what the answers were.

My partner and I have booked an overseas trip.

My primary insurance is Medicare, which of course does not provide any coverage outside the U.S.

I did a Google search for travel insurance, and found one site that said it was specifically for HIV + individuals.  When I clicked on the "get quotes" button, my browser gave me this big warning to close the window immediately, as the address wasn't what it was supposed to be or something like that.

So does anyone who is on Medicare have any recommendations on getting travel insurance?

I alwasy use Freedom Travel when I need travel insurance. http://www.freedominsure.co.uk/ I'm not sure if they'd be any use to you as it's a British firm, but they may have connections to an American company so it may be worth a phone call to find out.

They're very good and they cover any pre-existing medical condition, not just hiv. Their cover is quite comprehensive and it's not over-priced either. For people with hiv, they go by your CD4 count and my premium has always been the same as my hiv negative partner's. I think the premium goes up if your count is under 300, but don't quote me on that.

Good luck RAB, hope that's of some use to you.

PS - I understand this company is underwritten by a company called AXA - that might give you a lead.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Try travel guard www.travelguard.com  through AIG.  They will cover pre-x, but only up to $15K and emergency evacuation up to $25K.  I have never used them. AXA I am familiar with, but only when sold as an add on to a group insurance policy.  As Ann pointed out, they are UK based, however it would not be a bad idea to see it they cover outside the UK.

Safe tavels!
