Petrified about last Saturday night !
« on: June 27, 2007, 12:35:39 AM »
Hello all,

I am really scared about a potential exposure last Saturday night. I got drunk and called a SW from a local agency(my first time with a SW). The girl appeared under the influence of drugs and could potentially have an STD.

The incident lasted 4 minutes, the SW provided a condom that did not break (I checked under the sink), We did a few positions, then i felt uncomfortable and threw her off and she finished me off by hand. She used LUBE and gave me a protected BJ as well.

Given her background i am sketched about acquiring HIV through this experience.

Have you ever seen anyone test positive from protected sex with a SW?

What about other STDS?

Should I get tested for HIV after 13 weeks?

I am really scared, and i have symptoms that include fatigue, cold like feeling and immune system being very low.

I really regret the incident, feel guilty and wish it never happened.

What would you recommend, my course of action should be?

I am pretty upset about it.

Thank you all.

You had protected sex and thus you were not at risk of contracting HIV from this sexual encounter. On that basis you do not need to test for HIV.

Nevertheless all sexually active people should have a full STD screen at least once a year. Twice is better. There are STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea which are far more prevalent and transmissible than HIV. If it's been a while since your last full screen or if you've not had one before you may wish to make an appointment with your doctor or local clinic. A full STD screen will include, but is not limited to, an HIV antibody test.

Allow me to restate that I don't think you need to test for anything because of this sexual experience, rather regular screening is a good habit for sexually active people to get into.

I suspect that your fears about this encounter relate to your guilt about seeing a sex worker. Whilst we're not able to assuage your guilt, you should know that sex workers (particularly those attached to agencies) are generally fastidious about their sexual health and no more likely to have an STD than other groups in the community. HIV is about what people do not who they are.

Also mixing drugs and alcohol with casual sex is something to avoid.

I would encourage you to take the time to read our Welcome Thread which contains links to our HIV testing and transmission lessons.

As Matty has told you, you absolutely weren't at risk for HIV in this situation. You used a condom which is exactly what you're supposed to do. Condoms are very democratic and provide effective protection no matter whom you are with.

The biggest red flag to me in the incident you're concerned about is that you were mixing excessive drinking with casual/impulsive sex. That's a dangerous combination as it's all too easy to throw caution to the wind in that kind of situation. So that's somethng for you to avoid in the future.

This time out I don't see any cause for concern about HIV.
