The Heavy Rains Are A Coming
« on: September 28, 2010, 09:07:11 am »
So we are about to get a tropical depression/disturbance here in sunny South Florida - the rains will start this afternoon.  They are projecting that between the hours of 4 AM and 7 AM tomorrow we will get 2 inches of rain an hour with flood advisories issued.  All totalled they are predicting about 12 inches of rain.

I have already submitted to take my "Floating Holiday" tomorrow from work (a floating holiday in every sense of the word).  I have already flood proofed my home:

The last couple of storms up here in the tristate area have been brutal.  Tornadoes, damaging winds, floods.  I don't ever remember having this many severe storms so frequently.  Thursday is supposed to be another nightmare.  It makes commuting really fun since a little rain shuts down all forms of public transport it seems.

I guess it is good for the trees and plants, you know, when it isn't uprooting them or destroying them.

Hope the rains don't do too much damage in Florida...I see it was 113 degrees in downtown Los Angeles and I did a double take on that as I lived there two years and the weather was great.  Such high temps are usually only reserved for Death Valley already!!! ???

And speaking of the tornado Pete mentioned it came right through Forest Hills which is a few blocks away from me here in Queens and some trees really look like they went through a war, it's a shame.  Sidewalks came right up.  Thankfully, few injuries and only one fatality on the highway some two minutes from my apartment when a tree fell on a woman who pulled off the road.  My block was mostly spared, save a few large branches.  I had left work a bit early and just got home when it got eerily dark and the torrential, blinding rains arrived.  Only lasted about 10 minutes or so...Then fire engines and ambulences for hours after that...Strange weather, but not statistically at all impossible, even here in New York for September especially, a month that gives some potentially tough weather, balanced with some of the most comfotable days with the nicest blue skies, warm temps and low humidity.
