The pitfall of interent research for many
« on: August 27, 2007, 12:00:55 pm »
"When participants selected a link from Google's result pages, their decisions were strongly biased towards links higher in position, even if that content was less relevant to the search query," states the report.

I have seen both on these boards and elsewhere people citing something as proof of their argument simply because it comes up in google search.

I think this is most dangerous with Denalists who know how to tag their stuff properly and increase their hits so that their stuff usually comes up at the top in certain searches.

I don't think most people realize that algorithms are simply tools to be manipulated by interested parties.

This is why I always say that in many ways I'm very glad I received my HIV diagnosis before I was exposed to the internet.

iggy....

is that you?  eowzza~~eozza!!

So as not to officially go off-topic, I agree.  Although I was diagnosed post internet, fortunately I had come down with a case of PCP so I was in no shape to go surfing.  I was so sick, I just went with the flow and did what my friends and family told me what to do.  The computer was way out of my league.  (at times I think it still is.)

Was that French for ewwww?  :D

I think that the problem with the internet is also the gift of it: the speed and wealth of information available.

Unfortunately though they have created filter controls for computer, no one has yet invented one for humans and if we see it, we often believe it.

I hate it when interested parties manipulate my algorithms.

Nice pic, Iggy!
