Hi Banana, welcome to the forums.

Could you give us a bit more information? What are your numbers like and are you on meds and if so, what meds? Some of the meds can cause anemia (AZT, for example).

Getting pregnant could possibly make anemia worse, depending on what's causing the anemia in the first place. You would be wise to fix the anemia problem before attempting to get pregnant.

If it's an iron deficiency causing your anemia, birth control may help because it will make your periods lighter. I used to have very heavy periods too and I ended up having a Mirena coil fitted.

The Mirena coil is an IUD that is also impregnated with hormones (similar to the Pill) and it has all but stopped my periods. I do get one every couple months, but it is limited to very light spotting and only lasts 36-48 hours, sometimes even less. I only have to use a thin panty liner - whereas I used to go through several heavy-duty night-time pads in just a few hours, even during the day. Some months this would go on for up to two weeks. Two weeks on, two weeks off. What a nightmare! I never had any energy and I was also slightly anemic.

Has your doctor run additional tests to find out the cause of your anemia? If he/she hasn't you need to get on his or her case and make sure this is investigated more thoroughly.

Again, welcome to the forums.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
