HIV and Colon Cleansing???

Does anyone know if colon cleansing is not advised for someone who is POZ?

TMI here: I just feel like I'm really backed up in my tracks and if I have gas it smells like death and I feel so bloated even if I eat some small amount of food....  I think I need to have my colon washed but don't know if it would be advised against doing so......

Any thoughts???

Well I wouldn't want to  ask why you want to do this if you don't need to, but you flush out everything when you have a colonoscopy  and there are not problems.

Ah, a devotee of what is also known as "Pamper Diana Day" after Diana, Princess of Wales aka Lady DieDie.  AFAIK there is no medical consensus on the value of a fabulous gin and colonic, so your question is probably a non-starter.

Otherwise you're newly diagnosed with a low-ish t-cell count meaning HIV has flourished for years in your digestive tract.  It will probably settle down at some point, but if you're on Truvada as I suspect then that's most likely the cause of bloating, gas and turds that smell like they came out of a Parade of Corpses™ (any semblance to a fellow forum member is purely coincidental on that count).  I take a daily pancreatic enzyme called Pancrecarb to kill the bloating and farts, but I seem to be the only person on these fair fora, though it is under the direction of my consulting HIV specialist.  Some people take Beano or whatever that more plebeian concoction is called.

I hope you don't mind me saying so, but reading between the lines it sounds like you're already convinced that you need to irrigate your bowels, so may I ask if you've done this previous to your HIV diagnosis?

People tend to become very obsessive when they're constipated... feisty even.  My father gets this way.  If you're constipated go take an OTC for it, I don't see why you are convinced you need to pour Niagara Falls backwards through the Lincoln Tunnel.

I agree.  How about trying this out for two weeks: eat all whole grains, (brown rice, barley, truly whole wheat bread etc) and lots of fruits and vegetables.  Concentrate on things like kale, dandelion greens, bananas, figs, raspberries etc.  During this time eat no white rice, white bread, noodles etc. and very little sugar.  At the same time drink lots of water.  I would be very surprised if it did not make a significant improvement.  If after two weeks of this you were still having the same problems, that would indicate that the problems went deeper than diet and required, perhaps, some stronger solution.

I think the question is, should you do the colon cleanse? I agree with Matty, it may not do what you think it will and may mask something more serious.

The suggestions about more fiber are spot on. You want a healthy BM? Give your body something with which to work.

Philly may have hit on it as well. Truvada is well known for causing gas that would stop time, bend space and make paint peel.

I know, I take it.  

Mind you, I like a clean colon as much as the next guy (memories of a certain bathhouse in L.A. and its communal douche nozzles come to mind ), but I think I would try the other suggestions first,

Just out of curiosity, what does your doctor say about your desire to let loose the floodgates?

Easy. (avoid if you have health issues with that part of your body)

In bathtub, adjust water temp on hand shower. turn off water. Unscrew the hand part (the pan handle). Press tubing gently against back door.
turn on water slowly, let it fill you. Avoid pressure build up. You'll evacuate soon enough. You way want to stay close to toilets for an hour or two.

You may rather do several small volume attempts than a big one

After a few attempts you will master the pressure/timing/volume, etc

Works fine with me. Avoid doing often (I avoid it unless truly necessary)

Study the underlying cause (not enough fiber, may be?) Fibercon and other over the counter stuff may help you

Experiment to find out what works for you in order to resort to the flushing technique as few times as possible. Experiment: Fibercon works on me. Yogurt does the opposite (constipation). depends on people, I suppose

But, as far as I am concerned, when I feel I need relief (gaz, pain, bad sleep...). I do it.

Make sure to clean/disinfect tubing before reassembly of shower

Some pharmacies and ... sex shops ... sell accessory that help introduce the tubing inside the Tunnel of Love.

I do not use... water pressure should be enough to open gate

Side note: it may be messy, but, also ... quite ... fun ;-)

Diet Comments/Advice:  Will start following that kind of diet and see if it improves

My colonic wash 10 years ago was done by a roommate but he said that he was instructed to do so because it was part of a physical.... I guess now I know it was not true!!!!

I've done the shower tube up the love tunnel but I guess i've turned into a clean freak that obviously i do it anytime a penis, fingers or tongue will go up there or I do it like everyother day because i dont like being backed up and I know just taking a dump does not clear everything out!!

I've not asked my ID Dr yet, have not had time but will email him tomorrow to see what he says.....

Actually, the human body is pretty damn good at cleaning itself out.  There's absolutely no need to ever have a colonic in your lifetime.  You seem to feel it's necessary, as you mentioned earlier you do it fairly often (not just once ten years ago in the military with some random dude).  Should I link you some literature about why you shouldn't be trying to scrub your colon clean with water constantly?

Oh honey, I doubt any of the tubs have them today. That was Mac's Baths, on Hyperion, in Los Angeles - and the last time I was there was 1983.

But, at the time, we thought it quite innovative. The hoses were in the showers, so you could douche and dash, so to speak.

That bathhouse was where I heard my first group discussion of AIDS, except it wasn't called that then. At the time, it was "Gay Cancer," was probably caused by poppers and needed a catalyst like syphilis or the clap or such to make a person sick.

Well I just do a quick flush it's not like I spend more than 2 minutes doing so.... as a pre-butt fuck ritual, then yes, at least 5-7 minutes to ensure that it's clean because no one likes a messy ride!  It kills the mood!!!

The whole doing it 10 years ago with some random dude was a joke.  It was done by a Colon Hydrotherapist.... there were some jokes being thrown here and there if I was sure it was a professional or it was just some guy that said it needed to be done..... I would never let some untrained person other than myself do that.... ewwwww

Actually I read some studies that showed that intestinal parasites, hook worms, "Helminthics" etc can affect HIV disease progression and that "deworming" had a significant impact on outcomes. The study was in Africa however so it may be less of a concern for those of your in developed countries HOWEVER there are certain activities (one in particular I can think of) that gay men engage in that may make them susceptible to helminthic infections (can anyone guess what it is?).

Still it wouldn't hurt to consider since HIV seems to be turning out to be largely a GI disease. There are very simple and inexpensive medicines you can take that kill all of the various things that maybe living down there.

Here is the study and conclusion:

1) Helminthic infections induce a state of chronic immune activation and anergy. 2) Eradication of helminths by itself, (independent of changes in nutrition and environment), is followed by gradual return of the immune profile to normal values. 3) PBMC of ETI are more susceptible to HIV infection 4)) Deworming can be associated with significant decrease of VL in helminth and HIV coinfected individuals.

in countries were such problem are rare, parasitic infection will show on standard blood work as the bugs make your Oesinophiles go out of range and would normally be spotted out easily (their normal range is below 3% in a person clean of parasites.)

You are right to point this out since while country of residence is important, it is imporant to remember that people travel...
