The first day in a new life
« on: March 29, 2017, 06:31:39 pm »
Good night, Everyone!

Today is kinda watershed day for me.

Few months ago a wound started in my penis... Very strange, cuz I didn't had any hit or sex activity in the past months, but i decided to wait and see how it react. After 3 days, still getting worse so I decided to go to the urologist that diagnosed it as Candidiasis and prescribed a cream for it... 2 months passed and I've been testing like 4 or 5 creams and no heal was observed, yet requested some exams for the urinal trait, everything OK, the doctor said the solution was a circumcision. So, I decided to visit other urologist, who said it could be due to diabetes and prescribed me other cream, and requested more tests (Folic acid, blood count, uric acid, Glycemia, Gamma-GT, etc), and I suggest for him to request HIV and Syphilis exams to. He accepted my suggestion.

Last Saturday I went to the lab for taking my blood samples...

Monday I received a call from the lab asking me to get back there because my ELISA got Undefined result and I had to take another blood sample for Western Blot confirmatory test. I was Chocked! White! Cold! Stunned! Without Reaction on the phone, among all my job mates, then I answered: "OK, I'll be there tomorrow morning!"

Shit! That was suppose to be routine tests!

I went there and today I got results.

It was Reagent! For HIV, and what shocked me more... for Syphilis too!

Today was a full day for me on my job, so I haven't had time to think about it, but when I arrived at home, I looked to myself in the mirror and said: "Now I'm poz!"

I already had a relationship with a poz guy in 2014, I know some of the habits, some of the Dos and Don'ts, I know I can keep taking a normal life, and do most of the things I usually do today... I mean, I shared a part of my life with someone poz, and this one shared a little bit of his life with me.

I was on PEP once during this time, but now is different.

Now I am challenged.

Tomorrow I'll schedule an appointment with an infectologist, I want to start the therapy as soon as possible, both for HIV and Syphilis (I know this is painfull, and it gets me even more worried than the HIV treatment).

I've also done a quick test for CD4, and the result was 303.

So, my friends, this is my story, hope you all are fine.

Kangaroo:  I'm sorry you learned that you are HIV positive, but glad that you have found this site for support, enlightenment, and, when necessary, guidance.  These forums are full of wise people, with experience and compassion.

I'm presuming by your CD4 count that your HIV test is conclusive, but, if it is not, make sure it is, since false "positives" do occur.

You appear to have a good attitude, though, of course, you are in shock but understand that it does get better.

Syphilis can be cured relatively quickly, so once that is done, you can fully concentrate on stopping HIV replication in your body with an appropriate antiretroviral regimen.

Your CD4's are well above 200, so that's a very good thing.  Now, you will need to know your HIV viral load and make it your goal to become "undetectable," in order to allow your CD4 count to recover.  Once you are "undetectable," your chances of contracting an opportunistic infection are greatly reduced.

By adhering to your prescribed antiretroviral regimen, once it is established, you have an excellent chance of living a long and healthy life.

Please continue to be a part of these forums as you begin your new journey.  Your story will help others as much as their stories may help you.

Best wishes to you and wishes, too, for your peace of mind.

Quick and painful treatment... I can't wait for getting healed, but I know Benzetacil is a painful drug.

Yeah, Man... Thanks for those comforting words.... After 2014, I face the HIV as a condition, I'm not scared with it (but yes, maybe with the preconception, my fear is in the humanity).

Yes, stigma still exists but you have no need to reveal your status to anyone other than the appropriate healthcare providers on your wellness team and, when appropriate, potential sexual partners.

Be careful not to self-stigmatize, though I know that it can be hard to do.  You are not the virus:  do not let it define you.  The best thing you can do is stop the virus in its track and go on and live a full and healthy life.

Always remember:  it does get better.

Hey Kangaroo

Firstly, Syphilis treatment won't stop you starting ART for HIV, so really just need to get on everything as soon as you can. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis(es) but glad you found us.

I was also co-infected with Syphilis at diagnosis, and although my 'titre' was very low (which indicated I may have inadvertently self-treated some time previously), as I am HIV+ the indication was to go for 'gold standard' treatment which was three injections, a week apart.

Now I dreaded these injections. I'd heard how painful they were and it terrified me.

As it happened, I didn't find them to be even vaguely a problem. In fact, if necessary I'd go and have another one tonight without a second thought. Very little pain during the injections and just a bit of discomfort over the following days, wouldn't really describe as pain though.

So how come my treatment was relatively pain free and others clearly hasn't been? I can only put it down to the way my clinic administered it. Basically, instead of one huge injection, they gave me two with the dosage split - one on each side. They also mixed the antibiotic with lidocaine (I think) which helped in terms of general pain. Also, I always assumed it was going to be in my butt-cheeks, but they actually injected quite high up - just under my belt line at the very top of my butt. This I think helped as sitting wasn't an issue, and I only really noticed it if I moved and my belt caught the area. Oh, and I also dosed myself up with painkillers before the clinic visit!

I can't say your treatment will not be painful, but it clearly isn't a given -as I've shown. Perhaps it's worth discussing with whoever if carrying out the treatment to see if any of the above mitigations can be made?

ojo          Hello and welcome...sorry for the diagnosis. The good thing about this, it's that you know you adquiered the virus, now you treat it. It seems you have the right attitude, that will help you and make it easier to keep looking forward. You have the right to feel sad, angry, etc. but after you get rid of your frustrations, get up and move on, you will be fine...I'm sorry about your siphilis, I don't know anything about it, I just can tell you, that you have to treat it as painful it might be, you have to do it, I also believe, you will be able to handle it...wishing you the best, please keep us posted and welcome to the club, where we have  lots of members who have decided to fight the virus and take back control of their lives...hugs                                      ojo

So... today I'm going to the appointment with the doctor that probably will set my treatment for HIV and syphilis... I'm anxious, time seems to go slow.

I came to the hospital 1.5 hours in advance of the appointment time, cuz I'm so anxious.

Where I live we have an specialized facility for HIV+ people and people on PEP... people can also get quick tests for almost every STD. It's kinda relaxing being here, because you see many people in the same situation, also many people that deal with it for years or decades, this give me strength.

Updating... I went to the appointment, the doctor wasn't an immunologist as I expected, but a general doctor... she prescribed me 3x2 shots of Benzetacil for Syphilis, but for HIV she said that more exams are necessary, including new CD4 count and Viral Load, and explained me that even the confirmatory exam have chances to false-positive result, and this chances are bigger if there is another disease that affects the immune system, like syphilis.

I think that's bullshit, my CD4 is 303, but I cannot fight with her.

Anyway, I have both of my butts in pain. Seem I've been horse-kicked...

I am happy that I am on treatment, at least for syphilis (that was what more disturbed me).

Glad you have started treatment for Syph

Not sure what the doctor was on about really - Syphilis only affects the immune system in the sense that any infection does. That is, due to you having Syphilis may mean that your CD4 is artificially low as the body is fighting something else, and that may rise subsequently, regardless of HIV treatment. But as I say - the same could be said for a lot of infections.

I'm not sure how it warrants any specific CD4/VL tests though - your standard schedule of tests following commencement of ART should be sufficient. You will be tested periodically for Syphilis of course, to make sure it's fully sorted.

If she is saying that you may have had a confirmatory false positive for HIV due to the presence of Syphilis, I think that would be the first time I've heard of such a thing...

Presumably you are having the 'gold standard' Syph treatment, so will be back for the next shot next week?

You need to do what's best for you, but I would consider staying with this doctor until you finish syphilis treatment and are definitely informed of your HIV status.

If you are confirmed definitively to be HIV positive, then you might consider switching to an HIV specialist (in the United States, these are often doctors who specialize in Infectious Disease).

But if you have no confidence in your current doctor, by all means look about for someone else to carry on.

Hi there. I know where you are coming from. The story for me was similar. I agree with what others have said about the injections for syphilis though... I had also expected worse but it was really ok. Yeah, sore to sit down, like a truck had run over my backside but it passes! Personally, I was already pretty sick with syphilis by the time the diagnosis came and the injections were a godsend. So I am pleased for you that you are getting it treated earlier. In all truth, it is sore for 3 weeks, with highs and lows... most sore for a few days after each injection and by the third one, your butt cheeks feel well and truly used, as do the local muscles. But it is better very quickly and MOST IMPORTANTLY you know the syphilis is treated.

As for HIV, well, as I wrote in my introduction in this forum, make sure you find a good doctor with whom you can talk and who takes time for you. I was lucky. Mine is great and is available any day of the week for me. So, make sure you get one like that, even if it is after you start treatment. 303 CD4 count is not high but it is a good starting point. I was below 200 when diagnosed and up to 700 pretty quickly. Now after almost 2 years of treatment, I very between 500 and 700.
This is of course not about me. It is about you. All I want to say is that is does get better. It is great to have a good doc and a few good friends who are there for you. As we all know, sticking your head in the sand doesn't help but facing up to our reality and everyday lives with support and love of people around can and does.
Glad you are on that path!

Hi there.

I am very happy because today I got my CD4 count and VL results.

My CD4 increased from 303 to 575 without any treatment, probably because I am healed from syphilis, while my VL is on 66.575.

I changed the doctor and went to an awesome immunologist who prescribed me DOLUTEGRAVIR 50mg associated with TENOFOVIR + LAMIVUDINA 300mg.

Today I start my treatment.

Cheeeers.

After u got infected did u realized mouth ulcers or a strange skin look in a specific area of your body?

I just went to a doctor this week because i was feeling somethink really weird in my mouth, and he said it is a very big ulcer close to my tonsils (i never had that)... I also got a peeling skin close to my nose, like a light psoriasis.

Is this related to HIV?

Mouth ulcers are common amongst both HIV positive and HIV negative populations.
I've had one many years ago, but not HIV related.

What did your doctor say?

Thanks my friends!

He said mouth ulcers are common due to low immunity after tonsillitis (I had tonsillitis last week).

Yesterday I completed 1 week on treatment and nothing has changed in my life. No side effect!
