Blood Test shows Liver Problems - what could it be ?
« on: December 10, 2007, 04:28:55 pm »
Hi all,

Bit of a puzzle for someone to solve. My girlfirend is unfortunately, now back in South Africa. She is on Stocrin/Combivir since April 07 and yesterday her CD4 were shown to be at 330 after a low of 106 last January. Thats the good news!. She has to go to a clinic and pay for her tests and medicine. The clinic also told her that the blood test  was showing a liver problem (She had TB in January, quite bad but obviously pulled through).

I assume they are measuring some enzyme in the blood or something. Any idea what the problem is likely to be (she does not know or understand it), how serious it is and likely treatment. I know it can only be an educated guess but i think it would help me.

Thanks,
Mark 86

Welll, it kind of depends on which liver enzyme was elevated and how much it was elevated by. The ones to pay attention to are ALT, AST and GGT.

Is she still on TB treatment? It can also cause liver problems and elevated liver enzymes.

Just a thought.

HUGS,

Hi Mark,

No, not on TB Treatment. That stopped about 6 months after diagnosis (stopped in May 07). The hospital in Bristol said then that she had some liver Problem and they were looking after her but she had to go back to SA and they don't have free treatment there so it is going to be difficult to get quick diagnosis and treatment in Capetown, not like UK.

If i had an idea what it might be and how serious it could be, i will find a way to pay for private treatment to treat her early.

She came down with AIDS whislt staying with me and i didn't know what was happening before my eyes. SHe lost weight and started shivering then lost it mentally - then we got her to hospital and they said it was TB and HIV.
Was such a shock for me and now i feel so passionate about finding a cure and better treatment for this horrible disease as i have been touched so personally by it.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings, thanks for the reply
