I was raised Roman Catholic with Protestant guilt added on for good measure. I moved past organized religion years ago and follow my own path now.

But years ago, I gave up sanity for lent. It worked so well, I just continued on with it.

One year, I gave up being a virgin during lent. IIRC, I was able to give up being a virgin twelve times. That it happened during lent was just a coincidence.

I'm actually giving up lipstick (for real).  Which is extremely difficult, I'm a lipstick addict.  But, for three days now, it's been lip gloss, no color.  Eek!

I'm thinking I will be giving up sleep ;)

I am giving up McD's, BK and Wendys. (Except for days when I have my dog and he needs his vanilla shake fix).

Lipstick!??  I'm feeling this a real privation. I'm assuming everyone who responds is Catholic like me because 1) does any other faith do Lent and would anyone but a Catholic or Muslim bother with the 3 pillars of Lent?  When I worked for the Saudis I felt Ramadan was about the same....

Last night I watched Frontline's Secrets of the Vatican
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/secrets-of-the-vatican/

It was pretty horrific (and annoying with the tacky manipulative mood music during the child abuse testimonials....).  Its all about the seedy intrigues that let to the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI (Ratzinger).  I came away hating him ever so slightly less than before. It's a portrait of depressing criminal rot especially the government of the Holy See.

I have given up discussing religion with anyone, and fortunately in Canada, it's a lot easier to do than in the States.

I have decided to give up being a lazy agnostic and drive my local Polish hunk priests completly insane with my 40 days off religous fervour. As a start I am so sorry about the actions off Henry VIII .....

I know people other than Catholics who practice lent.  For principle reasons, just to deprive themselves of something they enjoy, to practice self discipline.

And yes, lipstick.  I'm a total lipstick addict, have several brands/shades (Dior, YSL, Nars, Guerlain, Buxom etc.), and am missing wearing it.  Last year I gave up meat for lent, and it was not pretty.

Can you imagine 11 of us playing caterpillar, all in the name of u know who.

On hindsite I now realize why we were the talk of the town, I thought it was just we were nice people.

I always looked forward to the winter it made it soooo much easier with less friction on the ice but we looked a mess in Mass.
