Why should we take Atripla with out food??
« on: June 17, 2010, 07:30:17 am »
Does the food we eat reduce the potency of the med or we take it with out food just to prevent side effects.  I always have a problem of eating my dinner on time when I get home at night.  I sometime used to eat some snakes outside but this is not so often.  So most of the time I take my meds with totally empity stomach during night.  Now I am tiinking of taking the med just after eating my dinner.  Does this have any effect?  any idea, professional in fact.  Thanks.

In short - taking Atripla with fatty food increases absorption and can worsen side effects.
In contrast, taking Atripla with a nonfat snack can soften the immediate blow in the stomach.

After a time on Atripla, some people can take it with or without any kind of food and report no side effects.

Who told you to take it with food but didn't explain the point about fatty food?

Food only affects the side effects of the drug.  It works just as well if you're eating or if you're not, but the side effects can be intensified if you eat prior to taking it or shortly after.

Okay, that is fine.  You are telling me that it relats only to the side effects.  I don't think I have so far any side effects.  May be then I need to take my med like one hours after eating in fact of no fatty food.  Am I correct?

Essentially, you'll have to find out what works for you. My bf can eat anything he likes immediately before taking his Sustiva (it's the Sustiva in the Atripla that causes the food warning) and he has no problems. Experiment with it at the weekend or other time when you don't have to worry about possible lack of sleep or feeling groggy or dizzy in the morning.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
