Going for My First Colonoscopy and Endoscopy
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:00:30 am »
So, I'm scheduled to go 4/19 for my first ever colonoscopy and endoscopy (up the butt / down the throat) -- while it won't be the first time I've had anything put up my butt or down my throat - this will be the first time its done as a medical procedure  ;)
Any advice?
They gave me the script for the stuff I have to start drinking the day before -- question: When should I get the script filled (i.e. my appointment is on a Monday, I start drinking it on Sunday - so should I get the script filled on Saturday 4/17?) --- wasn't sure how long the stuff can be stored and what form it comes in (Is it powder that gets mixed with water or is it a liquid?)
Thanks for any feedback, advice, jokes, etc.

Hey Phil-

The point of the mixture for the colonoscopy is to clean you out completely.  That should be taken the night before your procedure.  Picking it up Saturday would make the most sense.   Sunday night is the worst part of the process.  Monday should be a breeze.

Hugs,

Camms

Thanks Camille -
They told me all liquid diet on Sunday, start the solution at 3, use half of it...
Then on Monday, finish it starting at 5 a.m. -
My procedure is scheduled for 1 p.m. --- needless to say, I am going to be a bit hungry afterwards.

Thanks for any feedback, advice, jokes, etc.

You can probably get the stuff anytime as long as you have the prescription. It's sealed in the container until your ready to use it.  The stuff I had was powder and you mix it with water. ( I used bottled water)  There's a line on the container to show you where to fill it to.

Then, when your ready to start, you drink 6-8 ounces every 15 minutes.  It took me about 5 hours to complete it all.  I used one of those timers , to remind me when to take a glass of it.  Make sure to measure the correct amount per glass.

I had my colonoscopy  at 8:00 am on a Friday.   I started drinking the solution, at 1:00pm on a Thursday afternoon.  For every glass of solution I drank , I chased it with a small glass of  Gator-aid.  You will have to keep yourself hydrated, as the solution pulls most of your body fluids into your bowels, so that you will empty out.

Don't drink any dark liquids (grape juice ETC) Only clear liquids, but Gatoraid is OK

There should be specific instructions, that come with the solution, if you have any questions ask the pharmacist.

I also had my last meal at midnight on Wednesday, prior to the colonoscopy on Friday, so I was very emptied out.

Probably an hour or so after you start the solution, be prepared to be near a toilet, it starts working pretty fast. Every glass I drank of the solution, I was on the toilet, within 10 minutes or so. ::)

I was super hungry after my colonoscopy.  I also had an endoscopy done back in 2003, not at the same time as the colonoscopy. Some people have a sore throat after the endoscopy.  I didn't though.

Don't forget to ask the pharmacist any questions that you may have,  just in case something isn't clear on the instructions.

Good luck !   Ray

They told me all liquid diet on Sunday,

Same here.  The only difference is I did the solution all within a 5 hour period. I guess there's different types of solutions with different instructions.

I am a little nervous about the procedures, but like all things I have learned since being diagnosed - you just do what you gotta do - and definitely use these forums to ask questions and get support.

Thanks again.

One more thing,  After I finished the solution ( around 7:00 pm, )  there's no more fluids until after the colonoscopy.

you'll be surprised how smooth things will go !! :)  It just the preparation the day before, thats a little rough.  You'll be fine.

Did they tell you to have a driver after the procedure.  The VA wanted to see my driver before I even started.  If I didn't have a driver, they wouldn't do it !!

One more thing,... Get yourself a container of moist wipes.  Your going to need them, with all the wiping your gonna do, during the prep !! It will be a lot easier on the butt, believe me !!

 ;D
See, the instructions they gave me were to keep doing the solution and complete it 4 hours before the procedure.  They say to do half on Sunday and then start the other half at 5 am on Monday and complete it by like 8 am. - be at dr. office at noon for registration and have procedure at 1 pm.

I will definitely get the wet wipes - as I don't want a sore bum.  I do have a driver lined up - (my ex actually -- we are still good friends) (Of course, I know that he will be enjoying knowing that I have to use the bathroom every ten minutes or so, as I always poke fun at him because he is on Kaletra and has always been the heavy bathroom user)

Thanks again for your suggestions, feedback and support.

I actually had an endoscopy done this morning.  I was apprehensive but it went unbelievably well.  My throat isn't even sore.  I go back for colonoscopy on the 17th to check out how my intestine is doing after having had diverticulitis last July same Doctor.  I have no fear now for the colonoscopy.  Now today I went home by myself (took the subway) and the Dr was fine with that but for the colonoscopy he said definitely have someone pick you up as you are under a bit longer.  The "twilight" or conscious sedation was awesome with no side effects.  All that and oreos and juice at the end.  LOL

Colonoscopy List:

2 Ply, very soft, quilted, possibly treated with Aloe toilet paper. At least 6-8 rolls, depending on butt size.
Reading material, a lot of reading material.  Or hand held video games
cordless phone
Air freshener
extra clean underwear....just in case the distance is too long from bed to bathroom.
That about covers it.....  :)

Thanks NYC -
Makes me feel better knowing that you just had it done.  They are doing both procedures on me the same day.  I am also having it done due to diverticulitis.  GI doc doesn't really know why they requested the endo also, but it may because I also had GERD a year or so ago (diverticulitis about one month or so ago)... still having some pains, etc. and everything you can imagine runs in my family (i.e. pancreatitus, pancreatic cancer, diabetes, diverticulitis, stomach cancer, colon cancer, polyps, bone cancer, gall bladder issues, aortic aneurysms, etc) -- I have dibs on the HIV though (only one that we know of in family with that)  ::)

LMAO -- thanks "m" - i'm not much of a bathroom person either, so this will be quite the change of pace for me  -- kind of always believed in getting in, getting it done, and getting out.  I will follow the list (along with wet wipes) -- don't know if I will need 6-8 rolls (I use the double roll Angel Soft and my butt isn't all that big - I have quality not quantity in that regard  ;)  )
Thanks for the tips!

My colonoscopy was a cinch.  I felt nothing during or after.  They had a monitor screen placed so I could watch the show, but whatever they put in my veins first knocked me right out.

The stuff you have to drink is a bit vile.  Biting into a slice of lime first and drinking through a straw make it tolerable.
It's a complex world

Heyy Phil,

Understand your concerns.  I had mine done about 1 yr ago and worried sick.  Very nervous going into it but it was a breeze. The worse part is the preps prior to the procedure.

Not sure what preps you have prior to, but mine were a little different. My procedure was at 1pm and my last full meal was at noon the day prior. The evening prior I was allowed to have chicken broth and then took the recommended solutions provided by my DR.

Dulcolax -- starting the cleaning process. Take it the night prior after taking the chicken broth.
Waking up the next morning, I mixed MiraLax (dry solution) with 64 oz of Gator Ade (drinking 16 oz every 15 minues).  Within an hour I had to go to the bathroom every 30-45 minutes almost up to the procedure.  I was thoroughly cleaned out by the time of the procedure.

Once I was in the pre-op room with everyone else, They gave med the sedative and  I only remember in the recovery room and a nurse trying to wake me up and get dressed.

I'm going to be honest here, but I don't see what the big deal is. :D  It's not like they're opening up your knee while you watch.  You wanna make it interesting?  Do what I did, get one after having 3 weeks of burning acid like diarrhea...  On second thought, I've had my knee opened up and you know what?  Phil, you have every right to be concerned. :o

I had an endoscopy a few years back. No soar throat, but my neck hurt for some reason. It was done in the ER, I was told later that they are not known for careful handling. You should be fine in the hands of a doctor who does the procedure often.

I am going to go into it prepared --- I actually like the being knocked out/sedative part -- I ask for that everytime I have been to the dentist for an extraction -- couple of seconds of dizziness followed by waking up in the recovery room --- I can handle that -- now if only they would give some percocets for the pain (but seeing that everyone says there is no pain, I don't see that happenin --- dayuummm!!!  :(  )

Well you could lie to them, tell them you've had 3 weeks of acid like diarrhea. ;)

Honey,

Double ended endoscopy is nothing to be afeared of! It's much like a good night out at a quality leather club, except the drugs are so strong you don't get to enjoy the experience.

I'm sure you'll make a fine pig on a spit. :)

thanks matty (oh, can you let me know what a fine pig on a spit means  ??? )  I'm sure I'll be okay -- still think i'm going to play on what skeebo said regarding the acid diarrhea (my luck they will prescribe extra strength Motrin)

hey phil,

sorry to hear about the diverticulitis, man. they are likely doing the upper gi scoping to rule out upper gi ulceration. when your all done getting reamed (clinically speaking of course ;) ), make sure your doc schedules you a consult with a good nutritionist...that is key.

also, try and eat lightly in the couple of days before you start the cleansing...that'll help limit what needs to exit & save you many trips to the bathroom  :o

Thanks Max -
I will definitely watch what I eat --- I'm planning on going to Pridefest on Miami Beach on Saturday before the Monday I go for the procedure, so I willl have to watch what I eat and drink there (kind of bummed out about that)....

My ID Doc already gave me a referral to a nutritionist - I will be making that appointment as soon as I am done with the scopes...

I have to say that I am so glad these Forums are here -- getting a wealth of info, support and I don't feel alone in this process.  I wonder if they will let my ex - who is still a good friend of mine be in the room with me??  Afterall, it wouldn't be the first time he has seen something going up my bum  :o

Your ex? It depends. If you're fully anaethestised, then I'd think not - you won't be aware of anything and he'd just be in the way.

If you're sedated and semi-aware then maybe, but really it's no big deal. So long as he's there afterwards to drive you home his purpose will be more than fulfilled.

I was thinking it might make for some good post-procedure sex  ;D   One time when he and I got back from Disney World we were having sex and he flipped me, but I didn't move my hand quick enough and dislocated my thumb - because we were both a bit drunk we called the ambulance and I had to go the ER -- when I got back with my hand in a semi cast, it made for some good sex....  just a bit on the kinky side :P

I've had a couple of dual-holed endoscopies and the main post procedural events I experienced were magnificent farts.

See they inflate your poo-tube with air during the ordeal and when you wake up all you're gonna want to let rip are some wicked notes on the bum-trumpet.

Which is almost as good as sex in my humble 'pinion. ;D

Reminds me of when they took my gallbladder out, air gets trapped under the diaphragm so I had the lung capacity of an asthmatic emphysema sufferer for about 3 days until all the gas escaped.

Wishing ya good results.  I've taken a couple people to have it done and they've almost blown holes in my car seat on the way home..lol.  I know Versed is a usual drug they give people and that can be a problem with some HIV meds, right?  I suppose they just don't use that drug if it is contraindicted.

I had a lung scope in the hospital.  I remember waking up during it and heard them talking.  That was freaky, but I went back asleep.

If Versed is contraindicated in Phil's case they will have an alternative on offer. I know the standard short acting anaethestic used down here these days is propofol.

Many of us will always think of Michael when we hear the word Propofol.  I wonder if it has made people afraid to take it thinking they'll turn into Michael?

Hi Phil- good luck with the procedure, Im sure you'll do fine. I had a colonoscopy several months back, another one coming in May. I had the "miralax prep" (like jayjax) as they call it, which involved dulcolax, miralax w/ gatorade and the procedure first thing in the am.  I would agree with mpositive's supply list, but add to it that you need to make sure the phone is cordless or it is in the bathroom.  Do not get too far from the bathroom. Move a chair in there if you have to.   :) The procedure itself was nothing for me. I was out cold for it.
Im sorry to hear about your diverticulitis, they thought that might have been my issue, but things are improving for me with the Atripla.  I dont know what they're gonna find, nothing I hope.
Be well.

So, tomorrow's the day of the procedure -  today I am doing the half-litely --- actually took the two pills that come with it and will start drinking the liquid at 6....  half tonight and then half in the morning.  Procedure is at 1:00
I am hungry right now, and on an all liquid diet today, so by the time the procedure is done it will be like 36 hours since I will have eaten solid food --- this sucks, cause I love to eat! >:(

Sorry I haven't been on for a while -
Went for procedure on 4/19 --- here are findings:
1) Erosion of esophagus
2) Hiatic Hernia
3) 2 Polyps removed for biopsy
4) 1 thing removed from stomach for biopsy - they think it might be H. Pylori
5) Diverticulosis
6) Hemorrhoids

Doc is having me come back in 3 weeks when biopsy results are back -
Put me on Prilosec
Other than the prep - when I had to go the bathroom every 15 minutes, everything else was cool -
didn't feel anything at all --- slept through whole procedure I guess
When I first showed up on 4/19 they said that they didn't know why I was there cause they had me down for 5/3 - I showed them my paper which showed 4/19th and let them know that after going thru the prep I was not leaving without having the procedure done.
Thanks everyone for your support and feedback.

Wow. So the old crap factory is pretty fucked up?

Matty -
With everything I have put up there in the past - I'm surprised that it wasn't more fucked up --- they thought they saw a toyota up inside me - but couldn't get it to stop long enough to get a picture of it ;D

Were there a car full of gay skeletons inside of it with one foot slammed on the brakes?  Glad to see you posting again Phil and sorry everything seems all jacked up but at least now that they know you got problems they can start fixing you.  So, was the doctor administering the colonoscopy cute?

Glad you're back online Phil. Was starting to wonder where you went off to.
