Upcoming Hernia Surgery....UGH!!!
« on: January 14, 2011, 05:01:57 pm »
I have hernia surgery (my first time ever going under the knife) scheduled for next Tuesday and as it draws closer I am getting slightly more anxious.  This morning had the pre-op stuff done.  All the discussion of living wills, anesthesia, emergency contact just turned my stomach into knots.  Even with the reassurance of the dr that it's a very routine procedure, provided he doesn't cut the intestine, my mind is full of all the things that could go wrong - I wake up still with the hernia but no balls or a bag is taped to my leg, a sponge is left inside, the anesthesiologist is cracked out, I am more nervous than a virgin at fleet week.

On the upside if all goes well in 4-6 weeks when I am "out & about" and drop the pants my penis won't shoot off to the side but be sticking straight out and hopefully look a tad bit bigger.  Of course in my case that doesn't really matter since it usually isn't used during my "out & about" evenings.  But until then I have the dread of the surgery and recovery, including my mom visiting to take care of me for a few days,  to deal with.

Hey there,

Sorry to hear about your hernia. My BF had his hernia surgery (for two hernias) a few months ago and he is doing fantastic. He had to wait a long time to get it done because of insurance issues and the jitters but so glad that he did it. He was very worried about the surgery but it was quicker than they said it would be and the recovery wasn't too aweful. It's good that your mother will be with you for a few days as the pain meds may give you the false impression that you can start doing more physical activity than you should. My BF was walking around way too much the first day but I can barely see the scars now.

You will do fine. Let us know how it goes.

Good luck this Tuesday.   I can certainly understand the anxiety.  I had my Inguinal hernia surgery, (left side), done on June 7th, 2002.

I was working on June 6th, 2002 (climbing a ladder at work,) when all of a sudden there was this pop and tearing sensation going on in the left side of my groin.  I knew I was having problem in this area several weeks prior to this happening.  There was a little bit of a bulge forming, but it wasn't that painful, until I climbed the ladder that night.

I think my surgery lasted about an hour and a half.  I was completely put under, and after waking, and going through about 1 hour and a half, of post op, I walked out of the hospital into the car, where Ed drove us back home.  I went to bed right away, and stayed in bed, for at least the next 36 hours, only getting up, to go to the bathroom.

Depending on the type of hernia, sometimes the testicle sack will swell, and become... well painful. Best thing to do is lay on your back. I am not saying this to freak you out, it's just what I experienced. So if you experience this, you 'll know this is due to the surgery.  I was also told that a swelling may take place.  But ,  It doesn't always occur. You will be most likely told of this this.

You will get a prescription for pain meds, so get it filled right away,( or have someone fill it while your in bed) and plan on taking it easy over the next 2-3 days.  The doctor told after my surgery, that I would not be able to do any heavy lifting again.  I also, did not have any kind of mesh put in.  The surgeon, decided I didn't need it.

This was also my first time going under the surgeons knife, But the pain I was experiencing at the time, was quite a lot, and I said " Lets get this over"

I returned to work 1 week after surgery, and was on light duty for about another 4-6 weeks.

It's been over 8 years, and I've never had a problem again with it.

No heavy lifting !!

Good luck-- Ray  ( wear comfortable loose fitting clothes, )

Woodsy,

I'm sure everything will go well.  It's understandable to be nervous, but try not to get too anxious.  We'll all be here waiting to hear how it went.

I saw your post about this on FB.  I'm sure all will go well.  My best friend had hernia surgery last year.  He got ill from the meds or some infection.  It wasn't anything serious, but he felt bad for a few days.  It prompted his mom to ask me whether he was HIV poz.  He isn't as far as I know, but shows how people think.  He also complained that he could feel the wire mesh a few weeks after it was done.  That went away.  But, just tonight, he told me how he picked up his friend and thinks he injured the area again.  So, no lifting hot guys during sex!

I've always been a little worried about being knocked out.  I need to have a colonoscopy and I don't like the idea of being sedated/knocked out.  But, we have to do it.  All the best!  If you need anything, let me know.

Best wishes for your surgery woodshere! I've had quite a few operations myself, although none were for hernias. Several were far more invasive though, and I've never had problems. I'm sure you'll be fine. Just follow the doctor's orders regarding healing time and movement restrictions and such, and don't be afraid to use your pain medicine if you are hurting!

And I think writing "do not remove" on your penis is a really funny idea. I'm sure the doctor would be amused  ;D

Even with the reassurance of the dr that it's a very routine procedure, provided he doesn't cut the intestine....

Jeeze, your doctor really knows how to instil confidence! ::)

You'll be fine. My ex had both sides done and he said it was the best thing he could have done. He had some sort of mesh inserted and never had a hernia problem again. His procedure was done about twenty-two years ago.

And here's hoping it makes your pee-pee look bigger! :)

Hey woods, I've responded once, but wanted to elaborate a little. I've had both sides done 15 years ago. I've got two sheets of polypropalene (sp?) mesh across my abdominal muscle that are basically spot welded in place. In the center of each sheet, at the location of the hernia, is a kevlar plug. The doctor described it as a badminton ball stretched out over the hernia.

Short term, focus on your recovery. Take it easy, nothing strenuous, but keep moving. Letting those muscles get tight will cause you a lot of pain. My first one, I walked out and made it home hopped up on morphine, took a nap balled up in fetal position, and when I woke I was so stiff it felt like I was ripping my balls off to stand up. Second time, lesson learned, I kept my body straight during recovery, and things went much better for me.

Don't overeat, and eat foods that are easy to digest. It'll save you some pain during a bowel movement.

Probably don't want to have sex of any kind for awhile. Not to scare you, but for me, orgasms were a little uncomfortable for a good six months after each procedure. The feeling builds, muscles tense, causing pain, the feeling goes away. My partners thought I had legendary stamina, really it was just kind of frustrating. If you wear boxers you may want to consider switching to something with more support.

Long term, I've been ok, but I know they are there. The incision scar is something I don't like to touch. For a good couple years I could feel the mesh through my skin. And the spot welds at the edges of the mesh are still no touch areas. Not because it hurts, it just feels wierd. Fingernails on a chalk board sort of thing.

Anyway, good luck, you'll be fine.  ;D If you're lucky, you'll get a cute nurse to do the preop shaving.  :o

Thanks Zachary!  After reading that I know I will do everything in my power, on a daily basis mind you, to never.....  ever..... get a hernia.   The only experience I have regarding hernias concerns a friend I had when I was in my early twenties.  His girlfriend said he had been complaining about lower abdominal pains for a couple of weeks.  Then one night he woke up in such pain they rushed him to the ER.  It was too late and he actually died from it.  I don't know how or why, but it was alarming at the time to find out one can actually die from one of these.

There is actually a documentary type reality show that plays on MTV called True Life.  In this particular one about girls not able to trust their boyfriends, they had this guy named Shawnie and smack in the middle of the show, it suddenly shows his girlfriend crying in a room.  She looks up at the camera and says, "Shawnie died last week from an untreated hernia", my jaw dropped.  It was like one minute here he was rapping to girls behind his lady's back, and the next, he was dead.  The way she described it even was eerily similar to what happened to my friend.

It's the reason I told Woods previously it's good to get this thing taken care of....

This is a link to the story I mentioned:

http://remotecontrol.mtv.com/2008/08/03/true-lifes-shawny-gone-but-not-forgotten/

I'm having the same procedure done in a week so I'm starting to get a little nervous. I was glad to find this thread...
