Hello Ladies,

I have been contacted by Laura Whitehorn, a senior editor for POZ, concerning an article about disclosure she is writing for an up-coming POZ magazine issue.

She writes...

POZ magazine would like to quote some of the comments on the women's forum, with no names (and with any personal identifying details, such as marital status, children, employment, etc, removed).

We want to quote, in particular, several comments on how stressful it can be to disclose one's HIV status - how hard friends can make it by demanding reassurance from the recently diagnosed person.

We would like to use these quotes in order to help POZ readers who face the same challenges, let them know they are not alone -- and to encourage them to join the forums as a way to get support. If you would feel exposed by having your words (edited, as I said, to remove any identifying information) printed, please speak up and we will not use your quotes. Thank you.

While we are giving everyone the opportunity to opt out of having any of your forum posts quoted, I would encourage you allow your words to be used. Anything that encourages other women to join in and avail themselves of the love and support we all find here has got to be a good thing, right?

Remember, identifying information will NOT be used in any quotes.

Please support Laura in her efforts to help other positive women find support. Thank you!

Ann

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Sounds like a good thing to me.  I don't believe I've ever talked about having problems disclosing, but I know a lot of people do.  Thanks!

For Laura...re: "how hard friends can make it by demanding reassurance from the recently diagnosed person"

For whatever it is worth to the article, I have never had a friend or family member demand reassurance. And a bundle of them know.

Hi Ann,
Can you give us a heads up when the article publishes?
Thank you.

Laura emailed me today to say that she's hoping her article will be in the June edition of POZ. :)
