Oral Thrush
« on: February 13, 2009, 08:29:50 pm »
Does anyone know if oral thrush can be an early symptom of HIV, like the fever, swollen glands, etc.? Like for someone just seroconverting or is it typically reserved for people with acute HIV and/or AIDS?

I am not sure why you are asking this.

Sure, people with HIV can get oral thrush, but so can people who don't have HIV - just the same way that lots of people get fevers and swollen glands that have nothing to do with HIV.

So - the fact that someone has oral thrush doesn't mean anything - other than the fact that they have oral thrush ...

Hi Snoofle,

I reviewed your previous posts and it's pretty obvious that you're talking about yourself and not your positive bf.

For a start, has this oral thrush been diagnosed by a doctor, or are you just assuming that's what you have? Oral thrush is difficult to diagnose and should be swabbed and checked by a lab. Chances are good you just have an ordinary coating on your tongue.

Next, as md said, oral thrush is no indicator of hiv. I have always been prone to thrush, since long before I was hiv positive. Any time I take antibiotics I make sure I get the remedy for thrush at the same time, because I always end up with thrush after antibiotics.

Third, according to your posts, you and your bf have not been having sex. If this is still correct, then there's no way you'd have been infected. If you are having sex and using condoms, then there's still no way you'd have been infected. Hiv is transmitted through unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse. It's not transmitted from toothbrushes or environmental surfaces.

If you're worried, go test. If you two are having sex, you should be testing once a year or so anyway. You need to understand that seroconversion illness does not always come with symptoms such as you list. Most people notice nothing at all and this is why regular testing for sexually active people is so very important.

I really think you're likely worried about nothing. If you think you have thrush, go to a doctor and let the doctor diagnose you - don't try to diagnose yourself. If you DO have thrush, there are meds you can take to get rid of it. And remember, thrush can happen to ANYONE. You don't have to be hiv positive to get thrush.
