Title: Blood in Eye
Post by: ABCDABCD on December 18, 2012, 07:41:57 pm
I do not work in a healthcare setting but my job requires that I often interact with individuals that have been found medically disabled. The other day I had a meeting with a person that had known impairments of lupus, hepatitis, etc. She had difficulty speaking as though she had lost her voice. She has been legally disabled since the mid-90s.  HIV status is unknown.

During our conversation she was roughly three feet away from me.  I felt something enter my eye.  I understand that saliva is not considered a risk.  However, if the saliva contained blood and entered my eye, how woukd this be different from situations where individuals have been infected through blood exposures to their eyes?

I apologize for my ignorance.  Thanks in advance

Not an HIV concern.

Not an HIV concern. The only time it would be a concern is if you WERE in an emergency medical situation and had arterial blood from a person with a high viral load generously splash you in the eyes. Even then the transmission stories are scant and do not take into account the personal lives of the infected personnel.

Suffice it to say that you had no risk for HIV. You probably got a little spit in the eye. No biggie.
