Title: Scared Shitless.
Post by: ubotts on August 26, 2007, 11:21:35 am
HI all.
Recently Ive been bruising easily..My skin has gotten thinner.
Iam not on aspirin or nothing that could thin my blood.
I have purple looking blotclots on my arms...All someone has to do it tap me or if
i stretch myself ..it happens.
Then last night, i was on the computer for hrs with just my undies on and when i
when to get off the leather seat, my skin actually stuck to the chair...
I had to get off so slowly because it was so painful...
When i finally got off, I saw a layer of skin shaped like my butt and legs were on
the chair.. ??? I couldn't believe it.
I saw the Dr's that morning and was told my numbers were good, platelets were find
and they said the bruises on my arms were probably from taking prednisone ..
But that was in December of 2006...almost 9 months ago..
So ,, they really didn't have an answer for that.
But later on when my skin came off an stuck on the computer chair, i got scared
shitless.... :'( Iam am starting a new clinic on Friday..I was not very happy with the
one i have going to for 3 yrs now, since i moved from NYC to NJ..
I wish i would of stayed in NYC just for the doctors...There great there.
This state or this clinic stinks..Iam not happy and i am moving on..
I need answers...If anyone can help for now, id appreciate it..
Btw..

I started taking truvada last month and my tcells went up from 241 to 294, so that's
good news..Then they said all my numbers were good..FINE..
But whats up with my skin..Got no answer.. :'(
Iam so down about this...Hope the new clinic can help me..
Thanks for listening to me...If you have any suggestions, please post..
I need answers..thank you all...luv skinless bruising kinda girl.. ;) oops on the top of the page i meant stratching ....not stetching myself..lol :D

Hey Ubotts,

I have seen bruising like you describe come about because of blood-thinning agents and for people with diabetes, but have not heard of any HIV-related reasons.

I am no doctor. When you go to the new clinic this Friday, make sure to show them what is going on and tell them what happened with the chair.

I wish I had a better answer for you. I will be keeping you in my thoughts.

HUGS,

Mark

I would highly recommend you put a big fluffy terry cloth towel on your leather chair  if you choose to sit in it naked.....or wear clothes.  I have experienced the same problem of "sticking" to things.  Dont you live in New Jersey? I am in philadelphia and we had some of the worst hot and humid weather recently.....everything seems sticky.  I change clothes three times a day.

ubotts, you don't take cumadin do you?   I have heard of people bruising easily, but if your platelet count is normal I just don't know what it might be.   Hope you can get some answers.

hugs,

Alan

ubotts, I bruse easier now than I use to and I brought it up to my ID doctor and she said it is normal for people on antivirals. They also did a platelet test and hematocrit test to make sure that by levels weren't falling low again. So far my hematocrit and platelets are staying in almost the normal range, nothing to be concerned about. I do have an OI and the majority of it is located within my bone marrow which affects my levels and production. Nothing worse than having to be transfused. In the last two years I've had 6 units of blood and 8 platelets. It's funny how it takes longer to receive it back, than it does to give it.

Dear ubotts, I am so sorry you are having these problems.  I had a low platelet count since my initial diagnosis in 1991.  In 2003 I was bruising all over my body, just from the slightest tap or bump to a  chair, wall or anthing.  I had purple black bruises all over my body.  I was rushed to the hospital and they treated me with extra special care, they made me stay stll, I coud not move whatsoever I felt like the boy ion the` plastic bubble until they knew what was wrong with me, for fear that I would bleed out internally.  After a couple of days  the hematologist/oncologist figured out I had immune idiopathic thrombocenic pupura.  I said , I HAD WHAT? It's a very rare platelet disorder, only 200,000 people in America have it.  Steroids were prescribed initially prescribed.  I gained a lot of weight and 6 months later, my platelets were still whack.  So the next step of the protocol was to preform a splenectomy.  I was lucky they did it laproscopicly, so only 4 small cuts  instead of being cut wide open. The surgery was a success.  I hope you do not have ITP.  I urge you to ask your doctors to test you for this. Most people who have it do not have HIV/AIDS it can happen to anybody.  With my case they are still conflicted as to if it was a result of being on the Hiv meds for over a decade. The link below take you to the platelet disorder association, formerly ITP People.

My Best To You,  JeffreyM

From the PDSA website

ITP, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, also known as immune thrombocytopenic purpura, is classified as an autoimmune disease. In an autoimmune disease the body mounts an attack toward one or more otherwise normal organ systems. In ITP, platelets are the target. They are marked as foreign by the immune system and eliminated in the spleen, or sometimes the liver.

Researchers have identified more than eighty autoimmune diseases. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that 5% to 8% of the United States population, between 14 and 24 million people, suffer with autoimmune disease.

The number of individuals in the United States with ITP has been estimated to be approximately 200,000. In adults, about three times more women have the disease than men. In children, the ratio is about even. It affects all age and ethnic groups. There are about 100 new cases of ITP per million people per year. Approximately half of the new cases are in children.

No large sample study supports an estimate of the incidence of ITP, rate of new cases per year, or the prevalence of ITP, total number of people with a disease. There is anecdotal evidence that the percentage rate of ITP cases is increasing in the United States. However, no carefully documented studies exist.

Ubotts baby,
I think you should maybe give it some time to watch and see what happens. If the docs thinks it' s perdixone than wait to see what happens in another 6 months,,but you feel u don't like the answer get another doc,
you are you're own advocate.

much love,
Nicole
